A month that was meant to be devoted to volunteering at one single orphanage in Kupang, West Timor- has changed pretty drastically after staying there for only 78 hours. To put it lightly, I don’t support animal and/or child abuse, nor do I want to serve an establishment that practices both atrocities daily. How CNN can praise such a twisted/corrupt place like Roslin Orphanage by covering their story in their show “Heroes,” is absolutely beyond me. Then again, I suppose the dictators (oops, i meant “directors…”) of the place, only allow the cameras to see the fluffy, happy rainbows and daisies side of it all. Mistreatment/abuse is behind closed doors. Always. Details of my prison-like stay there will come later. So, what’s next? As recent fugitives of Roslin, my new Danish friend and I have a car to cruise the island as we please. My mission? To visit as many orphanages/non profit establishments as possible, seeking out that inevitably ugly truth behind each of those closed doors. And reporting it. Doing my best to bring down the bad guys with nothing other than the power of words (well, that and the Internet of course). I plan to expose such evils through personal testimonies of the children, fellow villagers, and workers (luckily I also have a new Indonesian missionary friend coming along as a translator). But my real hope? To stumble across at least ONE legitimate, GOOD place where these poor children are provided with love, respect, and proper care. Somewhere that isn’t run as a business, that doesn’t profit from forced child labor, or manipulated donations. Yeah, that’s what I really hope to find. Cross your fingers. Off now, hitting the road with this ever so randomly peculiar threesome of people. Wish us luck.
