Children of Chernobyl: A Summer in Co. Cork
Back in July, 1994, eight years after the explosion at Chernobyl, a group of children from Belarus arrived in West Cork, Ireland to spend a summer with Irish families. The goal was simple: Strengthen the immune systems of these children affected by the disaster. The surprising outcome was the strength of the bonds made between two cultures.

I absolutely Loved this elective. We were given the theme ofĀ āHomeā for the two week block. The first thing that popped into my mind when i thought of my home wasĀ āThe Farmā. Growing up on a vegetable farm is what i associate with home, I wasnāt much of a farmer but i enjoyed helping dad with the flowers over the spring and summer months. I didnāt like mud and getting dirty but spending time with dad is a memory i will treasure for a long time. My Mumās boot are green, My dadās wellies are black and mine are red. West Cork is myĀ āHomeāĀ Ā
I printed my familyās wellies using lino. For the last few years its just my parents and i at home because my siblings have all moved out from West Cork. I dry pointed the fuschia in the background because West Corkās symbol is the fuschia. The hedgerows are covered in the beautiful vibrant red and purple flower.
