"No, no, listen. This is my spot to sleep, when I chose to, yours is over there. Look how I found nice things for you to sleep on, you should be thankful." Fawnlock motioned to the pile of sodden leaves across from him, under a tree a small way away from his own nest to sleep in.
Mary sat patiently beside him, smiling sweetly. They'd only stumbled upon each other recently, Fawnlock having thought he was the last of his kind in the forest. At first he'd thought her bothersome, she was playful to the extreme and quite distracting, but she was growing on him like a fungus, and he liked fungus' (especially the odd ones) so he decided she could stay.
Her dark fur and skin and pale markings had caught his attention instantly and he was extremely fond of how she looked, but wouldn't admit so because it wasn't important to anything, but if he looked at her for a little longer than he needed to, no one had to know but him.
They'd spent a few weeks now together, with Fawnlock teaching Mary what english words he knew (because english was fascinating and Mary should be interested too) He'd share other knowledge if he was in the mood, and Mary would listen intently before bopping him on the nose and running away, hoping for a chase. This was a favourite game of hers and he found himself unable to resist following after her at breakneck speed, as if some kind of internal impulse was pushing him along. Thinking about why he couldn't resist chasing her until they were both out of breath confused him, and he wasn't particularly fond of being confused, so he tried his best not to think about it at all.
"I'm turning over now, so go to sleep. You should be exhausted, we were running around for hours earlier, I caught you five times." Fawnlock said smugly, pawing around for his favourite blue scarf (with many holes) to tuck over himself. He really was exhausted and he wasn't quite sure why, he was normally awake for most of the night but Mary really was taking it out of him.
He also found that being too far from her left him feeling uncomfortable, so experiments away from her were hard to conduct, and experiments with her with also hard to conduct because she always wanted to play. Even so, he didn't like leaving her. She was small, and although she could certainly protect herself (she'd lived alone before him and survived, and she'd smacked him enough times when she was annoyed with him for him to know she could take care of herself if need be, but still.) She was small, and sweet. In her own way. He was used to her company, that was it.
He curled up under what was left of the scarf and closed his eyes before seconds later a small, furry body curled around his. He sighed and wriggled his tail grumpily, hoping to pass the message across without words.
As if completely ignoring the message, small dark arms began to curl around his chest and he gave in with another sigh, resigned to his fate of now having a small wriggly sleeping buddy. There were worse things, he supposed. Atleast he didn't have to sleep with his brother any more.
He felt Mary sigh against his shoulder blades and wriggle even closer, and his chest filled with warmth, as if he'd licked from a puddle warmed by the sun. It couldn't hurt to cover her hands with his, he thought, she had awfully small hands and he was sure they probably got quite cold.
With his last bit of energy, before letting sleep take him, he shared a thought he'd been meaning to tell her all day.
"Tomorrow's going to be a fantastic day. We're going to annoy a human. I know where one lives in the forest and sometimes I tease him, because his reactions are fascinating, but he's never seen me. Imagine what we can do with both of us"
