we were leaving, car halfway out the driveway - and I see a glimpse of her in her childhood house, walking through the garden. and usually I would just make my peace with it and hope she didn't see me so it's not awkward. maybe wave. but she did tell me she dreamt about me. the air is sweet and the sun is shining, you know?
so today I run. I run like the wind - leaving the car open - I run towards her through the road we always ran through as children, all the summers and winters. I run so fast I can hardly breathe.
she notices me - and runs towards me. it's immediate: no hesitation. like we're children again, falling into each other's arms so hard we nearly knock ourselves out. and as I hold her and she laughs, as always, good gods, I know immediately. I don't say it but oh I know right away.
but she tells me anyway, laughing, her bright eyes full of joy, and she holds me again, giggling into my hair: I'm pregnant, can you believe? I'm so glad I saw you today, I wanted to say it face to face. can you believe, can you believe?
I can't, but I hug her hard enough not to need words.
