The Microsoft Seeing AI project. Substantial work that wouldn’t have been possible even 3-4 years ago. Until now, advancements in several key areas have made it possible for the blind to understand the world around them in new ways.
• Easy to access computational power (a supercomputer (aka smartphone) in anyone’s pocket or purse). Simple object recognition stays in the palm of the user’s hand (no “calling home” to servers to process and crunch the information unless a more sophisticated description of what’s being viewed is needed).
• AI (Artificial Intelligence)/ Machine Learning. Thanks to deep learning and neural networks, object recognition and a sense of what’s being observed is better than it’s ever been (although still a ways off from the type of immediate, high fidelity recognition we humans take for granted).
