Do you know about Weird Pride Day? It's a thing, and it’s today, March 4th!

I don't know exactly when it happened, but I embraced weirdness a long time ago. I still have a journal of mine from middle school, and this is what I wrote on the inside front cover at the time:

And after I had thought of it,

Now admittedly, I found it way easier to apply this to accepting others who were different in some way than to myself for a long time. I was friends with the closeted gay kids and the gothy kids and other "outliers" even though I didn't necessarily identify with any of that myself. I still masked hardcore for most of my life, though.

What finally made me proud to be weird instead of ashamed was finding out there's an actual name for it and whole community of other weirdos like me! I'm not broken, I'm just autistic, and we're supposed to be the way we are!

So now, I'm not afraid to be weird. I'm teaching my kids it's okay to be weird, that our whole family is weird! I own it, and no one can use it to hurt me anymore.

It’s a day to reject the stigma around being weird in any way. It’s also a day to celebrate diversity of human kind.

So to celebrate, I’ll tell you something weird about myself

"Normalcy" is a fluid and ever-changing social construct created, influenced, and enforced by the power structures of social hierarchies. When we recognize that "normal" is a social contract, we can challenge and dismantle these harmful norms.

Today is Weird Pride Day, and because I consider myself a “Proud Weirdo,” I am embracing my true self and proclaiming:   “I am proudly and unapologetically weird!” As a Queer, NeuroDivergent Person, I spent a large percentage of my life trying to fit into narrow societal norms (that I was never going to meet).  Growing up, I was always an outsider. People have found me weird my entire life. I am autistic. I am a recovering drug addict. I have experienced psychosis. I am asexual.

All of these things represent a departure from the status quo. When people ask, “What is normal?” the resounding answer is “Not me.”
