Ho’omanawanui vs. Ahonui: Defining Patience
This is just my definition, and how I think of these words.
Ho’omanawanui - to be patient, but to me is more to practice perseverance; the stretching of time and outlasting it. Ahonui - also to be patient but in a sense of endurance. awaiting something, or suffering through something. Ahonui I think of as a sigh. Big breath. After being frustrated about something, a product of awaiting something out of your control.
Ho’omanawanui, is persevering in a time that has been stretched. finding things to do in the meantime; understanding the need for waiting. I feel like Ho’omanawanui is waiting for tea to steep, or getting to know someone. Ahonui is to endure, to have endurance, needing to last until something happens. Ahonui is like waiting for an uber when you're late, or the feeling you get when a crying child that won't tell you what is wrong.
