So they answer her and she tells them a story. It's not an old one, or a particularly good one, just something she's cobbled together from various events. Ethel's stories are long and rambling, with many irrelevancies and simple language. But the children seem to like them, and that is enough. So she finishes and then has to bodily carry Teddy to his bed. "Oy, I can't do this much longer," she tells him, and he just laughs and somehow becomes even heavier. Ethel staggers the last few steps.
