Week Six, aka February begins!
Hello Fellow Travelers,
I guess we’re all in a bit of uncharted water now... Still, I’ve always felt the best way to deal with something scary is to face it in smaller more manageable pieces. Everything seems so much easier to achieve in mini goals.
So, we will attempt normalcy, even in the face of adversity. Fortunately, Dear Travelers, one of my first favorite designs happened this week. It was an experiment in different brushes as well as my first real merge of my creative storytelling and my attempts at art.
Yes, the car is horrendous, the lines are certainly unclear, but I loved her face, her hair, her pose. I was actually content with her. This was a huge step because she looked more or less what she seemed to me. This was one (of many) versions of fem Crowley. To me, TV Crowley’s wardrobe screamed rock star. I imagined a fem version to be a little more punk. This Crowley loves listening to Barracuda by Heart, before it naturally turns into Barracuda by Freddie Mercury. Safe Journeys, Calypso

He let out a noise of surprise as his arms were suddenly full of a sweaty body, as Tommy threw himself at Louis and held on tightly. “Thank you so fucking much,” he muttered against Louis’ shoulder, squeezing a little. “You have no idea how much this means to us.” Louis softened a little, gently tapping Tommy’s back. “I absolutely know what this means, lad,” he replied, his voice gentle and supportive. “The way you’re reacting to being out there? That’s exactly why I chose you for the support slot.” He gave a reassuring squeeze. “You deserve this, okay?” He pulled back a little, gripping the back of Tommy’s neck and looking him in the eyes. “You deserve this.”
Why a lectern binding?
Who stands behind a lectern?
A man (or woman) of great wisdom who is sharing his wisdom with others.
The young men who stand before this book become men of greater wisdom. The book must be read at a table and the elevation represents a sense of greater power for good.
The stand is also representative of a sheet music stand often found in music and reflects the theme of the publication
I want to create an experience. It’s not just another book on the shelf but a tactile experience which will intrigue young men to pick this one up and actually read the content.
The influences of personal experience on the creative design process and storytelling in music. Life and emotion is reflected in the work.

Updated Plan – 6.1
I updated the plan for week six to see how I can spread out the work to a manageable level.
It does not seem too manageable there are so many time consuming processes which I will have to cram into my spare time and the weekend around work and other commitments as well as job applications.
I am behind on writing, making, poster and presentation design, prototype making.
I am now looking at this schedule above thinking it is unrealistic. I will need to reduce the quality of output across a number of formative deliverables to be able to deliver a quality medium fidelity prototype for feedback which may be the most important part.
Colour Palette Refinement
First I selected colours which I liked in other materials that have been produced. Then I made vivid CMYK equivalents of RGB colours I created with the colour picker.
Then I printed these sheets out and selected the best 12 colours and then merged some of them together.
When I had a refinement of 7 colours I then used adobe colour to ensure I had enough contrast in the palette to ensure greater readability as these colours are for a printed publication.
Typographic Choices
I also printed out several A3's with typefaces to choose how I would pair them and to refine it into a cohesive system to work across the publication:
In Class 6.1 & Week 6
This week a lot of my time has been consumed by the bindery.
I have learnt many new techniques I will need to know such as coptic stitching, cutting materials, glueing materials, binding methods such as end papers.
I am still working on finishing a medium fidelity prototype and am very stressed about it because I know how busy the bindery will be next week.
I finished a normal A5 coptic stitch bound book with the correct number of pages I intend to use
64 pages total (4 sets of 4 leaves or 16 pages)
I am currently working on the actual prototype which will be made using Glendex Lectern Binding which is a method Fleur is unfamiliar with (although all of the bindery staff are very interested in seeing it work and are helping me to produce it).
This is time consuming as I need to wrap eight different cover section parts which need to fold properly on each triangular angle.
