Hey, What’s Going on Over There?
By Kasey Waas
As I walked towards a crowd gathered in a neighborhood park this past Sunday, a couple of realizations came to mind:
Those two guys are dancing on some kind of tightrope.
I would normally have breezed right by, but today I have LRP performances on my mind.
Over the last couple years, I’ve felt my explorer spirit waning. When I first moved to Chicago, I would devote entire weekends to getting lost in different neighborhoods. As I transitioned out of grad school and into full-blown adulting, I’ve felt myself becoming a weekend recluse—content to relax in my apartment or another familiar spots as a calm mental break from the working week. This weekend’s performances of Freshwater on North Shore Beach reminded me how rewarding that aimless walk can be.
During the show, I watched strangers sidle up to our audience with inquisitive glances. Some stayed only until they received a whispered clarification while others latched onto the group and continued with us down the beach to the next reading site. People are hardly ever in a rush at the beach (if you are, I hope you are prepared for an intense sand running thigh workout) and this makes everyone a little more receptive to investigating what’s happening around them—to slowing down and participating for the sake of curiosity.
So when I spotted the crowd at the park as I tried my best to walk at a slow and contemplative pace through my neighborhood, I had to remind myself that I didn’t need to be anywhere—that I had plenty of time to investigate. I sidled up to strangers, they kindly provided some more details, and I enjoyed an impromptu showcase of talent that brightened my morning.
ohmygoodness guys i just got back to the city from a small town trip where there were no internet at all

She used to tell me about all the wonderful things there are to do there and how it was a great romantic destination for couples. I can not tell you how many times she told me, ‘when you go to Puerto…

Top 9 Instagram Photos of 2015 This has been one crazy year for me. Not at all what I expected 2015 to be. Not necessarily a bad thing but quite literally not what I planned. I left for Southeast Asia in November 2014 for what I thought would be the better part of the year meaning I wouldn’t even be back stateside until fall of 2015. But, after coming back home extremely early, I began 2015…
