The Flight into Egypt (éĺžĺĺ). Ren Yifang (äťťćżčł). Ink and color on silk. Early 20th century.
On display as part of the Palace Museumâs recent collaborative exhibition with the Vatican, Beauty Unites Us, The Flight into Egypt depicts the Biblical narrative recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, in which Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus flee from Jerusalem into Egypt, escaping Herod the Greatâs massacre. The painting depicts a mix of Eastern and Western styles in both its rendering and its subject matter, emblematic of much of the Catholic art that flourished during the Qing Dynasty.
The writing on the bottom right of the painting reads: âäťťćżčł ćçť,â or âRespectfully made by Ren Yifang.â In the upper left corner, the red seal reads: â夊丝ĺŁćŻďźä¸şćççĽ,â or âHoly Mother, pray for me.âÂ

Game Night. Christopher K. Ho. Glass. 2016.
Christopher K. Ho is a Hong Kong artist and curator who currently lives and works in New York. He has a M.F.A. in architecture from Cornell University, and a M.Phil in art history from Columbia University. His works range in style, from outdoor installations, to sculptures, to lecture-performances, to the glasswork seen in Game Night. Many of his works explore topics such as identity and class.Â
Game Night consists of 88 3-inch, laser-etched glass cubes and two glass balls. Taken apart, they transform into four games, a 3D puzzle, a domino-like game, a chess-like game, and a game that uses two round die.Â

The universe began as an enormous breath being held. Who knows why, but whatever the reason, I'm glad it did, because I owe my existence to that fact. All my desires and ruminations are no more and no less than eddy currents generated by the gradual exhalation of our universe. And until this great exhalation is finished, my thoughts live on.
Exhalation: Stories by Ted Chiang (ĺ§ĺłŻćĽ ). 2019.
Emerging in the public eye after the success of the 2016 blockbuster sci-fi hit Arrival, based on his 1998 short story âStory of Your Life,â author Ted Chiang published Exhalation: Stories on May 7th, 2019, a new collection of short stories exploring the nature of humanity and reality.Â
Known for both the ingenuity of his worldbuilding and the precision of his storytelling, Chiang weaves moving narratives exploring ethics and morals even in cold, futuristic worlds reminiscent of Netflixâs Black Mirror. As China MiĂŠville writes for The Guardian:Â âIn Chiangâs universe, humanism is inextricable from rationalism. Far from being counterposed as âcoldâ to emotionâs âwarmthâ, it is the rationalism of the characters â and the writer â that makes them emotional and human.â
