Journey to the Dark II (夜游记二) by Yang Yongliang (杨泳梁). Video. 2019.
Part of MGM China’s new multimedia art exhibition as part of Art Macao, Journey to the Dark II reinterprets traditional Chinese ink paintings in the form of an immersive video that takes the viewer through famous Hong Kong and Macau landmarks in MGM Theater, accompanied by an original soundtrack. Yang’s work bridges the gap between past and present, connecting the traditional and the contemporary with uniquely modern takes on ancient aesthetics.

Before I Die by Candy Chang. Public art. 2011-2019.
Before I Die is a participatory art project in which a blank chalkboard wall is put up for the public to share something they want to do before they die. After grieving the death of a friend and realizing how much society avoided discussion of death, Chang wanted to start a conversation. The project offers a space for people to reflect upon their mortality with others in their community. Over 4,000 Before I Die walls have been created in over 70 countries.
Artist Candy Chang has degrees in urban planning, architecture, and graphic design, and seamlessly combines them to explore ideas such as isolation vs. community, society vs. the psyche, etc., through participatory public art. Another one of Chang’s projects, Confessions, will be featured at the San Diego Wonderspaces art show in July 2019.

我坐在很低很乾的峽谷 岩石上,等候你五覺交感的淚涕汗涎 淹沒我為一仲夏夜之夢溪。也許 下一個黃昏,被遠方雙颱消息染暈 把你誤認做可能的颱風眼。 I sit on the rocks of a low and dry ravine, waiting for your five senses to blend into tears, snot, sweat, and drool, to inundate me and turn me into a stream in midsummer night’s dream. Maybe the next dusk, stunned by the news of a distant double cyclone, I would mistake you for a latent vortex.
from Summer Song (夏歌) by Chen Li (陳黎). 2013. Translated by Elaine Wong (2017).
Chen Li is a poet, essayist and translator based in Hualien, Taiwan. Regarded as one of the best representatives of contemporary Chinese poetry in Taiwan, Chen has published fourteen books of poetry and has been recognised with accolades such as the Taiwan National Award for Literature and the Arts and the Taiwan Literature Award amongst others.
Chen is a prolific translator of poetry, and has translated over 20 volumes of poetry into Chinese with his wife Chang Fen-ling. With a focus on contemporary poetry- particularly Latin American poetry- Chen Li is known for bringing non-mainstream poets into the Chinese-speaking world. Poets such as Czeslaw Milosz, Seamus Heaney, Yosano Akiko and Octavio Paz are amongst the many he has translated in his works, often for the first time.
Chen’s work is interested in the boundary between word and thing and the play across such boundaries. Translator Elaine Wong describes his relation with words as a case in which “instead of being summoned by things, word deploy things by forming creative constellations”. Rather, the signifiers and signified are engaged in a reciprocal relationship in which both are stimulated by the other.
