Selected works from the China, China series by Ah Xian. 1999 - 2002. 

Born 1960 in Beijing, Ah Xian is a contemporary Chinese artist who currently lives and works in Sydney. He is most renowned for his busts and full-body sculptures, which span a diverse range of materials - including but not limited to porcelain, cloisonné, lacquer and bronze. Working primarily with the human form, Xian relates the perception of the body as a record of cultural and historical identity,

Produced between 1998 and 2004, Xian’s China, China series consists of multiple porcelain busts overlaid with landscapes reminiscent of Ming dynasty decorative tradition, in addition to various other motifs. The series was created in collaboration with the artisans of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province - the celebrated centre of China's porcelain production in the early Ming and Qing periods - and following experiments in the ceramics workshop of Sydney College of the Arts. His casts were created by wrapping plaster-soaked bandages around the heads and shoulders of his models, who were initially friends and family members. By utilising the emblem of the bust - present in both the Chinese socialist realist art of his youth and the European portraiture tradition - Xian positions himself between cultures, reconciling Chinese and Western influences in a process of cultural negotiation.

Petulia’s Rouge Tin is a novella written in 1991 by Chinese author Su Tong. The official English translation by Jane Weizhen Pan and Martin Merz was published in 2018. 

Set in the turbulent 1950s of Shanghai, two former prostitutes, Petulia and Autumn Grace of Red Delight Pavilion, are taken away along with others to the Women’s Labour Training Camp. Their lives are completely changed after the new governmental movement to re-educate former prostitutes. The story follows Petulia’s relationship with a longtime customer while she remains in the camp, and Autumn Grace’s stay with a group of Buddhist nuns after she escapes from truck to the camp. The title refers to a piece of tin that serves as the only tangible reminder of their pre-1949 Liberation lives. There are two film adaptations, Blush (1994) directed by Li Shaohong, and Rouged Beauties (1995) directed by Huang Shuqin.

Su Tong is one of China’s most acclaimed novelists and is best known for his 1990 novel, Wives and Concubines, which was adapted into the film, Raise the Red Lantern (as featured by sinθ here), by Zhang Yimou.
