Thereās a spark in Sammyās eyes, and Deanās not sure heās ever seen anything quite like it. Heās happy. Really, truly happy, and God, it makes Deanās chest ache. What he wouldnāt give to see Sam like this all the time. Is this what life wouldāve been like had they been raised like real kids?Ā
They werenāt, though. They werenāt raised like normal kids. Hell, there wasnāt a damn thing about their lives that came even close to normal. Whatever the fuck normal meant anyway.Ā
Deanās normal⦠well, he knows itās sick, twisted. Itās no life to be raised into, but it isnāt just the monster hunting that makes him different. Itās the way his whole world revolves around his brother, the way heād give anything to keep the kid safe. Heād give his life for Sam without so much as a momentās hesitation.Ā
Itās the way something in himāsomething he tries so goddamn hard to keep hidden, something so foul and so, so fucking wrongātwists when he sees Sammy light up.Ā
Itās the way he loves his brother.Ā
āCome on!ā Deanās pulled from his thoughts. āLetās go!ā
Dean smiles, but itās weak. Thereās a darkness behind it that he hopes, he fucking prays, Sam doesnāt pick up on. Deanās happy, too. Heās happy seeing Sam happy, but he canāt seem to stay out of his own head.Ā
āGot your lighter?ā Samās holding a box of fireworks, looking back at his brother with this look on his face. Itās the best night of his life. Heās almost too distracted to notice the way Dean lags behind, just a little. Heās almost too excited to catch the sad look behind Deanās eyes, like thereās something more he wants to say. Almost. He doesnāt acknowledge it, though. He knows his big brother well, and if thereās one thing Dean doesnāt like to do, itās talk about his feelings. Itās like Dean has a moment of clarity, like something passes across him and that smile on his face grows. Heās grinning, but not as wide as Sam.Ā
āāCourse I do. Come on.ā Dean grabs a box from the trunk of the Impala as well. He follows Sam farther into the field, and watchesāmaybe a little too closelyāas the kid gets everything set up.Ā
Sam notices this, too. Of course he does. He notices everything when it comes to Dean. He notices each and every girl in his revolving door, when redheads become blondes become brunettes. He notices every bottle Dean drinks, how the number grows the more time goes on. He notices the way Dean tries to bury himself in whatever he canāgirls, work, and drinking seem to be the most popularāwhen the two of them get a little too close.Ā
Too close. Itās an odd thing to think about for Sam. Whatās too close for some brothers isnāt close enough for him and Dean. Whatās too close for most brothers is their normal. And whatās too close for the Winchester boys? Well, thereās no set answer there. Not really. Not when Dean seems to push and pull, to want everything and nothing to do with Sam all at once.
But thatās not what tonightās about.Ā
Sam finishes setting up and when he walks back to his brotherās side, thereās a spring in his step like never before. His smile is almost bright enough to light up the night.
āFire āem up!ā Sam shouts, practically jumping up and down. And Dean obeys.Ā
The first few go off, and the darkness of the night fades away in favor of all sorts of colors. Samās not sure where Dean managed to get these, or how he managed to afford them, but he doesnāt care. How can he care when heās watching the sky light up with so much fucking wonder in his eyes? One after the other, popping and crackling and sizzling.Ā
Itās quite the show, but Dean isnāt watching. Thereās only one thing on his mind, and thatās Sam. Boom. Something inside him goes off, exploding in the night. Boom. He canāt look away. He canāt. He canāt stop thinking about Sam, aboutā
āDad would never let us do anything like this!ā Samās looking at Dean, now, and that light hasnāt left his eyes. āThanks, Dean. This is great.ā And theyāre hugging.Ā
Well, Samās hugging. Dean takes a second to catch up, but as soon as he does, his arms are tight around his brother. He closes his eyes, face pressed against soft brown hair, and takes the deepest breath heās ever had to. He canāt let himself get carried away. Itās not normal, itās not right to feel like this.Ā
āYeah,ā he whispers, not even sure if Sam can hear it over the roaring fireworks. A little bit louder, he says, āyouāre welcome, kid.ā
The hug lingers, lasts a little too long before Dean starts to pull back. He canāt lose himself. Not yet. He canāt let his twisted feelings get in the way of what seems to be the best fucking night of Samās life. But Sam stops him. Heās got his fingers wrapped around Deanās wrists, and heās looking up at him likeā¦
No. Dean canāt think like that. There isnāt a chance in hell Sammy feels the way he does. Samās good. Heās not like Dean. Heāll never be like Dean.Ā
Sam doesnāt say anything. He doesnāt know what he wants to say, or what he could say. It feels like thereās so much hanging in the air between them. But he has a hunch; a gut feeling. He sees the way Dean looks at him when he thinks Sam isnāt paying attention, and he picks up on all the little tiny hints Dean doesnāt even know he drops. He has a gut feeling.Ā
And thatās when it happens. Thatās when all of Samās and Deanās forever-repressed feelings come to the surface. Thatās when years of pain and confusion and frustration and guilt are all worth it. Thatās when the fireworks cease, but the sparks still fly.
Thatās when they kiss.
Samās the one who initiates it, going against every goddamn stereotype the two fit into. But Dean reciprocates. God, does he reciprocate. The night is perfect. Itās a fucking dream.
It lasts too long, but not long enough. When they separate, this time, thereās something in Deanās eyes that Samās never seen before. Itās like, for the first time in Deanās life as a hunter, the weight of the world falls away from his shoulders. When they pull away, they both stand there a moment. Watching, waiting for the next move. What does this mean for them? Nothingās ever going to be the sameāthey both know that.Ā
Samās naĆÆve, though. He thinks itās going to be perfect from here on out. Heās already dreaming up scenarios, fantasizing about running away from their dad and this life and just⦠be.Ā
But Dean knows how the world works. Heās older, heās got more experience than Sammy. He knows thereās no hope for two brothers from a broken home. He knows the best way to keep Sam safe is to keep him at a distance. It wonāt happen again. It canāt happen again. He loves his brother more than anything, and Dean knows that loving Sam means not letting Sam love him. Not like this.
He doesnāt mention it, though. Not tonight. Not when Samās so fucking happy. Not when everything is perfect and nothing is wrong.Ā
Dean takes Samās hand in his, their eye contact never breaking. Heās happy, too. God, is he happy. Thereās a silent agreement as he slips his lighter between his brotherās fingers, as he pulls away and nods. Sam smiles more, if thatās even possible, and he runs over to their stash.Ā
āFire in the hole!ā he calls out, turns and runs back towards Dean. His heart is pounding, and heās sure that if heaven really does exist, this is what itās like.Ā
