I have a little weeTracys Halloween idea for you.
Picture Lucille leading her boys through the neighbourhood, all dressed in costumes and carrying a little pumpkin bucket or pillowcase to contain their treats. Scott's reached his teens, but he wouldn't miss trick-or-treating with his little brothers for the world. Alan's still more baby than toddler and is mostly being carried by his mum.
Alan's costume is an adorable rocket onesie. The nosecone (hood) and "stabilising fins" (arms) are red, the main body shiny silver, and his lower legs and feet are decorated with flames shooting from the black booster rockets.
(I'll describe the costumes of the others for other TAG trick-or-treaters, or in reblogs later.)

She was aware that she was getting âlooksâ but Lucy was made of sterner stuff!
John was asleep, the eight-month-old nestled against her and sitting astride her rather large belly. Scott was in the pushchair, wiggling and griping because sheâd been in too much of a hurry to let the two-and-a-half year old speed demon walk.
She didnât have time to be chasing her eldest around right now.
Lucy knew in her heart that her boys were not the reason for the looks. But sometimes she didnât feel like the wife of the first man on Mars but some kind of unglamorous lump that for some reason Jeff Tracy loved, married and had given her three children.
Absentmindedly patting baby number three - due in seven weeks - Lucy reached over to grab some bread when Scott gave a low, frustrated growl. He knew to keep his voice down so as to not disturb his brother, but the continuing attempts to get out were beginning to upset him.
âOut! Mamma, out!â
Lucy sighed and awkwardly half-knelt beside the pushchair.
âScotty, baby, if I let you out can you promise Mamma that youâll stay with the push chair and not run around? Can you do that for me?â
Scott regarded her solemnly for a moment before shaking his head.
âProâly no.â
Laughing at his total honesty, she bestowed a kiss on his head.
âThank you for being honest, Scott. How about, when weâve finished, we go see Grandma and Grandpa and you can run around to your heartâs content?â
The engine of Leeâs little Piper PA-28 fixed wing roared into life and little Scotty, all of four years old, squealed in alarm and clapped his hands over his ears. Jeff, standing well back at the hangar, scooped Scott up and held him close until the plane had taxied over to the runway.Â
âYâknow, planes arenât that scary,â he fondly said as soon as the plane was far enough away. âItâs just noise, nothing to be afraid of.âÂ
ââS not?â Scott asked, big eyes looking up at his father as he peeled his hands away from the sides of his head.Â
âNope.â Jeff smiled. âBesides, we need the noise to fly, and thatâs what weâre here to do, right?âÂ
âRight.â Scott nodded, his little face so serious it made him go all gooey on the inside at the sight.Â
âSo,â Jeff affected a serious mein (Lucy always called it his âTop Gunâ face), pulled his aviators out from where heâd hooked them on his shirt and put them on his nose. âLetâs saddle up, kiddo.âÂ
Scott immediately put on his kiddie sized aviators (and Jeff went even gooier on the inside) and announced âLetâs saddle up!âÂ
âAttaboy!â Jeff beamed as he walked over to his plane.
Something brought this one to mind recently, so I thought I'd bring it out for another airing.

For this story Virgil is older than John.
Lucy knew her nap was over when the shuffle of little feet on the carpet became loud enough to break through the drowsy fog. The little hand on her belly proved the point, but the whispered words kept her eyes closed for a while longer. Much of what her eldest son was saying was too incomprehensible for her sleepy mind to decipher, but she caught the gist. The hand on her very pregnant belly was part of an explanation that a baby was in there. The beginning of a very serious instructional talk.
âGoing big bruh now,â three-and-a-half year-old Scott was telling his barely one year old brother. Lucy was awake enough for her brain to begin re-interpreting the baby-talk to mean âYouâre going to be a big brother now.â
âLike me!â Scott continued. âI you big bruh. You baby big bruh.â
Lucy allowed her eyes to drift open a little, wanting to see how this information was being received, but not wanting to interrupt. Scott was too focused on Virgil to notice she had woken. She could just make out Virgil doing that little bounce on his chubby legs as he stood on the other side of Scott, with both hands holding on to her bed for stability.  A flicker of movement in the corner of her eye diverted her attention and she saw her mother-in-law tentatively look into the room, ready to shoo the boys away and let her sleep. Lucy caught Sallyâs eye and gave a slight shake of the head, which the older woman took as her cue to withdraw. The instructions continued.
âBaby come soon. I look (after) you. You look (after) baby.â The word âafterâ wasnât spoken, but Lucy was used to filling in the blanks.
The only response Lucy could discern from her vantage point was a slightly furrowed brow â Virgilâs serious expression, one he used when concentrating hard.
âBig bruh job.â (Meaning âThatâs a big brotherâs job.â) There was a pause and Scottâs hand moved onto Virgilâs shoulder. âI help you.â
âBa!â Virgil replied, rather loudly, with another bounce as he flexed his leg muscles.
Scott nodded. Apparently that was the required response. Instructions had been given and received, and with that Scott turned and headed for the door, with Virgil toddling after him.
Lucy stifled a giggle. Her boys were precious. She had no doubt the new baby would be well and truly doted on.
****
With the impending birth of a fourth little Tracy, bedroom re-allocation was required. Lucy had struggled with the best way of broaching the subject with her three boys, but neednât have worried. She should not have been surprised when five-and-a-half year-old Virgil immediately suggested John could move into his room. He further justified this as the best solution by adding that Scotty was the biggest so he should have his own room.
John seemed apprehensive at first, but Virgilâs enthusiasm for the idea was apparently a persuasive force. She watched, and silently followed, as he took John ever so gently by the hand and led him to the room in question to show him how it would all work.
âYour bed can go there. Under the big window. Then you can see the stars before you go to sleep.â His hands gestured at each space in turn as he spoke, his eyes alight with the imagining. âMy bed can go over there â I donât need the window.  Bookcase goes there. You gots more books than me, so it hasta go close to your bed. We can share my desk. Itâs got all my pencils and paints on it though. Is that okay?â
From her half-hidden spot just outside the door she could see John nod, seeming a little bewildered, but not altogether displeased with the idea.
âI promise I wonât be too loud,â Virgil assured his four-and-a-half year-old brother, âand itâs a big room, so youâll still have lots of space all to yourself.â
Virgil must have seen or sensed something in Johnâs mood that she could not from out in the hall. Â He sat on his bed, facing the window, and patted the space beside him, inviting John to sit to his left.
âI know lotsa things are changing right now.â There was a slow gravity to Virgilâs tone, so different to the rushed excitement of a moment ago. âItâs gonna be okay, though.â
Virgil stretched his arm behind his brotherâs shoulders, but waited until John leaned in against his side before letting his hand rest on the younger boyâs left arm in a gentle hug.
âYouâre gonna be a big brother now,â Virgil said softly, âjust like me and Scotty. Big brothers gotta look after littler ones. Scott looks after me sometimes. I look after you. You look after the baby when he comes. But weâll help you, too.â
âWhat about Mommy and Daddy?â
âThey got lots of grown-up things they gotta worry about. Thatâs why being a big brotherâs so important. Mommy and Daddy will look after all of us, but we can help them if we look after our little brother. I gotta look after Scotty sometimes too, âcuase he doesnât got a big brother.â
âDo you think I'll be a good big brother?"
Virgil nodded, and Lucy noticed the extra squeeze in the embrace.
"You're gonna be a great big brother. Â And if you need any extra help you ask me, or Scotty and we'll help you."
"Okay," John said, visibly relaxing. âIâm gonna help lots when the baby comes. And Iâll help you look after Scotty too.â
Virgil gave an emphatic nod.
âScott needs a lot of looking after.â
Lucy had to walk away before the laughter she was so desperately trying to stifle could burst out in a snort.
****
Gordon had just turned four, and with a new baby on the way the family had inevitably been throwing around the âbig boy nowâ comments. Lucy had been careful to involve Gordon in the necessary process of setting up the nursery furniture in the room he would soon be sharing, worried that he might resent the impending invasion. Unlike any of the other boys, Gordon seemed reluctant to step into big brotherhood. For over a week now heâd been very clingy, wanting cuddles with Mom on the flimsiest of pretexts, and needing Mommyâs (or, to a lesser extent Daddyâs) help with tasks that he had more than mastered.
Lucy was wondering what challenges today would bring when there was a commotion in the kitchen â a clattering of kid-safe plates, cups and bowls as though someone was rummaging through cupboards and spilling items out onto countertop and floor tiles. Gordon had just gone in there. With a sigh, Lucy heaved herself to her feet to see what was happening. Before she reached the kitchen door the sound of Johnâs voice prompted her to stop and listen.
âWhat are you looking for?â the eight-and-a-half year-old enquired with a patience Lucy was sure she could not have mustered.
âMy sippy cup,â came the simple reply, accompanied by more rummaging and clattering.
âWhy?â
âFor my juice.â Lucy could hear the exasperated sigh in Gordonâs voice suggesting this was the most obvious thing in the world, despite him not needing his sippy cup in well over a year.
âI was going to pour yours into a cup just like mine.âÂ
Lucy was relieved her perceptive third child had been smart enough to avoid the term âbig-boy cup.â The use of similar terms had been enough to induce tantrums over the last few days.
There were footsteps and a cupboard door squeaked open as John apparently went and retrieved Gordonâs sippy cup from the corner cupboard used to store all the retired-until-further-notice toddler items. Juice was poured, the lid popped on and the cup was slid across the countertop, presumably towards Gordon who had more than likely climbed up to sit on a stool opposite his big brother.
âYou know, just because you wonât be the littlest anymore doesnât mean Mom and Dad donât love you just as much as they always did.â
Lucy was not surprised John was able to pinpoint the problem behind Gordonâs regressive behaviour, but she was impressed that he was able to articulate it so well, and that he was willing to address the issue head on. There was no answer from Gordon, and she found herself imagining him trying to process what John had said, probably with head slightly tilted to one side and a squinty frown.
âI was the littlest before you were born,â John said solemnly, and perhaps with a hint of nostalgia.
âReally?â The shock in Gordonâs voice had Lucy visualising his russet eyes widening. âBut youâve always been big!â
John laughed. A quiet, contented, closed mouth, chesty sound that Lucy always loved to hear.
âThatâs because Iâm older than you. And Iâll always be older than you. Iâll always be your big brother, just like Scott and Virgil will always be my big brothers, and all of us, including you, will be the babyâs big brother.â
âI donât wanna be a big brother.â Lucy heard the pout, and the crossed arms in Gordonâs words.
âWhy not?â
âDonât wanna be sponstible. Wanna do fun stuff with Mommy, like before. Just me and Mommy. No baby.â
Lucy felt the prickle of tears in the corners of her eyes. John let out a sigh.
âYeah, it kinda sucks that you donât really get to choose to be a big brother. It just happens and youâre stuck with it. And it is a big responsibility. You need to look out for the little one, make sure theyâre safe â like when I had to stop you from crashing the toboggan into the garage. You have to help them with things they canât do yet â like I just helped you get a drink of juice. But being a big brother can be pretty cool.  If you help mum look after the baby youâll still get to spend time with her too. And you can play with the baby sometimes. Then when he gets bigger you get to teach him stuff.â
âLike what?â
âWell, the baby isnât going to know anything about the world, or how things work, or being a Tracy. Heâll watch you and learn from you â even when you donât know it. And when heâs old enough youâll get to answer all his questions â like I answered when you asked me about how tadpoles turn into frogs. Youâll be able to teach him important things like where all the best hiding spots in the house are, and not to steal grandmaâs cookies. Stuff Mom and Dad might not know, and stuff they might be too busy to help with â thatâs the kind of big brother stuff youâll need to do.â
There was a pause, and a soft shuffling and rustling of clothing. Lucy thought John might have moved around the kitchen counter so he could put an arm around his little brother, or a comforting hand on his back with a gentle rub.
âYou donât have to do it all yourself. Thatâs the best part about being a Tracy â we stick together, we all help each other. You have three big brothers you can come to whenever you need to.â
Lucy wished she could see her boys at that moment, barely holding herself back from entering the kitchen just to see their expressions, to see the demonstration of exactly the big brotherly love John was speaking of. She could hear the gentle scrape and clacking of cups that suggested the boys were sipping their drinks, perhaps even toasting the moment, before cups were tapped back down onto the countertop.
âIâll tell you a secret,â she heard John quietly continue. âI wasnât sure how I felt about being a big brother at first.â This was news to Lucy, and she wondered if she had missed something that she should have seen four years ago. âBut as soon as Mom and Dad brought you home I knew I would do anything to make you happy and keep you safe.â
âYou didnât want to be my big brother?â The teariness in Gordonâs voice was heart-wrenching.
âI changed my mind really quick. I found out having a little brother is the best feeling in the world. Thereâs nothing like the way you looked up at me when I held you in my arms, or the feel of your tiny hand wrapped around my finger. And you were fun to play with, especially when you were big enough to laugh.â
âIâm still fun to play with!â Gordon insisted, then doubt crept into his voice. âWill you still play with me after the babyâs born?â
âOf course.â John laughed again, this time a bright chuckle.
It seemed the serious conversation was over and the long silence prompted Lucy to begin to withdraw. As she walked away she heard the beginnings of a whole new discussion.
âAre we sure the babyâs gonna be a boy?â Gordon asked
âYeah, Mom and Dad and the doctor are all pretty sure. Why?â
âDo you think I could ask if we could have a sister instead?â As curious as Lucy was to hear how John would handle that one, she kept walking, unable to stop the broad smile spreading across her face, and the swelling of absolute love in her heart for all her boys.

Another little Halloween WeeTracy headcanon for you.
Pumpkin carving was a bit of a tradition for the Tracy family. The older boys had developed a healthy rivalry and would try to outdo each other with their jack-o-lantern designs. Only Scott, Virgil and John were deemed old enough yet to wield the carving knives, under the watchful eye of Lucille of course.
But Gordon and Alan were gainfully employed in "the scooping" - the removal of the pumpkin innards. They seemed to take great joy in managing to get pumpkin just about everywhere - in their hair, on their clothes, all over the kitchen table, and floor, and some of the walls . . .
And Jeff got stuck with bath duty!
Lucille told him it was because he had to stay out of the kitchen while the carving was done, so he could be the impartial judge of which jack-o-lantern was best.
This little fic was sparked by a recent conversation with @amistrio and @onereyofstarlight. I hope there will be more creations that come from that discussion!
Anyway, many thanks to both of those wonderful people for the inspiration as well as lovely words encouraging me to share this with you all.
Notes: This is pre-canon/weeTracys fic
(I'm picturing Alan as around 8 years old here)
It's general audience rated, family fluff.
...
The little second-hand book shop on Main Street was cosy and warm, but a little disorganised. Books of all types and shapes and sizes were stacked not only on shelves but on just about any flat surface, seemingly with no sense of order or categorisation.
None of that mattered to Alan, who browsed the titles carefully, very conscious of the five dollars burning a hole in his pocket. It was his money, painstakingly earned over the last few weeks so he could buy his biggest brother a present for his birthday.
Everyone said turning twenty-one was a big deal, so Alanâs present had to be special. He knew Scotty liked to read books. Actual books, with real pages you could turn â not audio books or ebooks, but the old fashioned paper type ones. And heâd done his research. Well, heâd snooped around in Scottâs bedroom and taken a good look at the books on the shelf. In any case, he had a particular kind of book in mind.
âHow can anyone find anything in this place?â John asked no one in particular. The chaotic charm of the non-existent filing system in the store was completely lost on him. In fact, it seemed to make him a little uncomfortable. âWhat kind of books are you looking for, Squirt?â
âThe ones about going places. You know, like the â um, guides?â Alan tried to remember the titles from Scottâs shelves. âLonely guides?â
âOh, travel guides, like Lonely Planet.â
âYeah, those ones!â
âAlright, let me see if I can find any kind of travel section in here.â
John crossed to the other side of the store and began scanning the spines of books on the tall shelves there, leaving Alan to flick through the books tumbling out of boxes on the table in front of him once more.
Some of the books in Scottâs room had been about aeroplanes and flying, but he seemed to have more books about travelling. There were at least three with that Lonely Planet logo on them, so he knew if he found one of those his big brother would probably like it. Scottâs bookshelves had contained a bunch of books that seemed to be written by people who had travelled to places the slow way â long train trips, or car journeys, or sometimes by bike or even on foot. Books that were less about the destination, and more about the journey, and the places you could stop along the way.
That had surprised Alan a little. It seemed more Virgilâs style to go slow and admire things along the way. Scott generally liked to get to places as fast as possible. He figured maybe the enjoyment came from reading about the way other people explored these places so Scott didnât have to go there himself.
It didnât really matter why he liked them, Alan just knew he had to find a book that was about going some place exciting or different. A travel guide, or something that had the word âtourâ or "journey" in the title. He figured heâd know it when he saw it.
A few titles with promise had caught his eye as possibilities when Vigil and Gordon came into the book shop. Alan ignored them as Gordon excitedly showed John the gift heâd bought from the Olde Curiosity Shoppe down the street. He knelt down and started looking through the books in the boxes beneath the table as John complained to Virgil about the books not being sorted by genre, or author, or alphabetically by title, or . . . anything.
Then he saw it. Alan knew this was the one just from the title. It was perfect. He was absolutely certain that Scott would love it. Without interrupting his brothers he took the book over to the counter and handed over his money to the kind lady who put his purchase into a paper bag for him.
âWe can go now,â he announced joyfully to the others.
Three sets of eyes were suddenly turned on him and the bag in his hand.
âWhat did you get?â Gordon asked, reaching for the bag.
Alan snatched it out of Gordonâs reach. âI donât want you to see until Scotty opens his present.â
There was some half-hearted arguing, mostly from Gordon, but Alan made it more than clear that he wanted it to be a surprise. Virgil, and then John, whilst curious about the book Alan had chosen, quickly backed him up and put a stop to Gordonâs attempts to look inside the bag. And with the shopping done, they headed home to prepare for Scottâs party.
Despite the milestone birthday, the party was a fairly simple affair. Just family â including some family friends who were considered close enough to be family â and a few of Scottâs closest friends. Plenty of food, some well chosen music, a few light-hearted games, cake and candles, then . . .
âTime for presents!!!â Alan announced, dragging Scott by the hand and leading him to the couch.
The coffee table was covered with an impressive array of gifts, all wrapped and tagged and begging to be opened.
âOpen mine first, Scotty!â Alan handed over a rectangular parcel wrapped in paper decorated with stripes of blue and silver.Â
The beaming smile and the sparkle in those big blue eyes beneath unruly blond hair had Scott chuckling and returning a dimpled smile of his own.
âAlright, alright.â
Scott teased his littlest brother by painstakingly peeling away the tape and slowly unwrapping the paper, knowing that Alan would prefer him to just tear into the paper as fast as possible. Once the wrapping finally came away the title of the book was finally revealed.
The Hitchhikerâs Guide to the Galaxy.
Scott could see the anxious expectancy written all over Alanâs face, and knew that a great deal of thought had gone into the choosing of the gift.
âDo you like it?â
âI love it. Thanks Alan.â He reached out and drew Alan into a hug. It wasnât exactly the kind of reading material Scott would have picked for himself, but he could see why Alan had chosen it. With a title that seemed to combine the travel guides he liked with Alanâs love of space how could he resist? âItâs perfect.â
For @janetm74, because while I can picture Scott as a parent, it was more fun to picture him as an uncle to small nephews. Virgilâs kids, to be precise. Warning: itâs complete and utter fluff. And some whump, poor Scott. Also, some very blue language. Enjoy!Â
(cc: @womble1, also for the idea.)
-------
Thwap. Scott winced and opened his eyes. He realised he was lying on the daybed by the pool. A small arm lay across his face. Frowning, he removed the arm from his face and turned his head. The small arm, he discovered, belonged to three-year-old Kip, who was snoring on his right. He grinned.
Like father, like son.
Glancing to his left, he spied Alex, also snoring - this paternal inheritance amused Scott to no end - sprawled next to him, left hand curled around Scottâs bicep and right leg resting on his hip. If the twins were on either side of him, that meant the weight on his chest had to be - he looked up and accidentally buried his face in a thatch of red hair - Jack, age one, lying face down on his chest, asleep. And not snoring.Â
He must take after Rebecca. Hmmm, how did we end up here?Â
Scott took a moment to recall his morning. The island needed restocking, and Jeff had a physio appointment in Sidney. A group consisting of Jeff, Grandma, Gordon, Virgil and Rebecca had gone in Thunderbird Two. Virgil and Rebecca were to resupply the island after dropping off the other three at Jeff's physio appointment. Gordon and Grandma accompanied Jeff to discuss his progress with his doctor and update his regimen.Â
Scott smiled. Though keen to get his health back after being in space for nearly a decade, his father was chafing at the restrictions remaining on him by medicos seven years after his return. He had tried convincing his family he could slack on some of his rehab, but they weren't having it. Jeff even appealed to Rebecca in the hopes she would side with him. But after discussing it with Grandma, the best she could offer was to go to his doctor and have his exercise and dietary regimen reevaluated.Â
Jeff felt betrayed. âEt tu, Becca?â But his family - led primarily by Grandma, Virgil and Gordon - agreed this was a good idea. So, on this appointment, Dad had company.
The man who said, âhumanity never got anywhere taking it easyâ was trying to take it easy. Scott smiled wryly. He checked his watch. They should be back soon.
With Kayo (something secret with Lady Penelope), Alan (at uni), and Selene (several client meetings) in London, and with John working on Five, Scott had been the only adult left on the island to watch the boys. He had been busy with rescues of late and was keen to spend some quality time with The Nephews. After a morning spent walking his favourite and most scenic trails around the island, followed by a quick jaunt to the beach to cool their feet, the quartet had found themselves back in the villa's kitchen for a snack. Then Jack wanted to snuggle, followed by Kip and Alex. The daybed was the closest place to comfortably lie horizontal with small, tired children.Â
A sudden pain in his side made Scott gasp. He quickly placed a hand on Jack's back to keep him from rolling off. What on earth?Â
Alex shifted again, digging his elbow into his uncle's ribs. Scott gasped again, quickly placing his hand between him and Alex's sharp elbow. Oof, that hurt.Â
Muttering under his breath, Scott gently tried to manoeuvre Alex so he couldn't jab Uncle Scott with his pointy elbow. Distracted by Alex, he was unprepared for the hand that smacked him in the face. Thwap!Â
Kip! Scott swiftly turned to find an angelic Kip snoring into his armpit. Lowering the boy's arm, he tried to shift Kip so he wouldn't keep hitting his favourite uncle in the face. He managed to shift the boy into his back. That should help.Â
Small boys resettled, Scott took a breath and, cosied by three small furnaces, found himself dozing. Puppy Pile: The Next Generation was FAB.
I like being an uncle. They really are the sweetest boyeeeeees!Â
Scott yelped, blinded by the searing pain that made him see stars. He was wholly unprepared for Jack's foot to so accurately connect with his testicles as the sleeping toddler shifted.Â
Oh, fuckfuckfuckfuck!! That hurts!!Â
Scott sucked in deep breaths of air. This definitely hurt more than when a twelve-year-old John had squarely kicked the head of his penis as the redhead shifted in his sleep. To make matters worse, John wasn't sorry and still teased Scott about it to this day.
That unrepentant fucker! He had escaped to Thunderbird Five, claiming he and EOS had work to do. That absolutely sneaky fucker!! Next time he can watch Virgil's kids.Â
Through controlled breaths, the pain slowly began to recede. Shifting Jack, so his legs straddled his waist, Scott felt he had sorted his nephews sufficiently to enable him to catch a restorative nap.Â
He had dozed for about a dozen minutes when something hard connected with his jaw. Stunned, Scott discovered Alex had shifted in his sleep and had somehow kicked his uncle in the head. His yelp of surprise caused Kip to stir, prompting a hand to thwap Scott's face. A sudden pain in his side made him jump. Looking at Kip, Scott saw him, still asleep(!), lunge and bite him a second time.Â
WTF?!?Â
Reaching to move Kip caused Jack to shift, and both of his feet connected with Scott's groin in a one-two kick. Weeping in pain and trying not to scream, Scott slid the small redhead onto the daybed, and he slid off it, rolling on the ground.Â
Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck!!!!
Scott didn't just see stars this time. Now he saw whole technicolour constellations. That's it. He decided once he could think again. Never again am I looking after the Terrible Three Tracys. And, Kayo and I are definitely never having kids.Â
He crawled to the kitchen for ice packs and some pain medicine. He swallowed the pain pills and sank to the floor, unable to stand any longer. He sighed, leaning against the cabinet with the ice pack on his groin and jaw. Never, ever having kids. Kayo will understand. She's wonderful like that.
Slowly, he recovered, dozing in the cool shade of the kitchen. Just as the last tendrils of pain faded away, he heard Thunderbird Shadow and Thunderbird Two returning. Ah, good. Scott was keen to see his wife and return Virgil's children to his care. He pulled himself to his feet. The movement didn't hurt. He was relieved. Craning his neck, he saw the three terrors were still asleep on the daybed.Â
No more puppy piles for me. I can be immune to their cute puppy dog eyesâŚ, especially Kip. Why does he have to so closely resemble Virgil? That's fighting dirty.
Scott turned toward the stairs when he heard family coming down them.Â
âHey Scott, how were things?â Virgil made a beeline for the daybed, rousing his children.
âThings were good.âÂ
âScott, are you okay?â Frowning, Rebecca approached him, looking concerned.Â
âI'm fine.â
She peered closely at him. âWhat happened to your jaw?â
âOh, it's nothing.âÂ
âAre you sure?âÂ
âYep.â Scott smiled at her. Rebecca's expression suggested she didn't believe him. âReally, Becca, I'm fine.âÂ
âHmm. Well, thank you for watching the boys.â She kissed him on the cheek. âIt was a productive trip.âÂ
âThat's good.â
Gordon came in, carrying a box of supplies. âYeah, Dad can cut back on two of his medications and drop several exercises.âÂ
âThat's really good news!â
âI agree.â The man himself strolled into the kitchen and sat at the table.Â
âGrandpa!â Three little rested boys came tearing into the kitchen.Â
âBoys!â Jeff hugged his grandbabies as they tried to climb into his lap.
âGuys, go easy on Grandpa. He can't play with you like Uncle Scott or me.âÂ
âOh! Daddy, we had the bestest time wit Uncle Scoot!â Alex beamed, and Kip nodded in agreement.Â
Virgil tossed Jack in the air, expertly catching him. âDid you have a good time with Uncle Scoot, too?âÂ
Jack giggled merrily in reply.Â
âWell, this is a happy gathering!â
âKayo!âÂ
âHi, Kayo!â
âHoney, you're home. I missed you.â Scott kissed his wife.
âI am. And I missed you, too.â
âDid you have a good time in London?â
âI had an interesting time.âÂ
âOh?â Scott looked closely at his wife. She was glowing. She mouthed something he didn't catch. âWhat?â
Kayo grinned at him. âLet's tell them.âÂ
âTell them? Tell them what? KayoâŚ.âÂ
âEveryone, can we have your attention?â Everyone stopped and looked at Scott and Kayo. âWe have some news to share.âÂ
We do? Scott frowned. What had she mouthed to him?Â
âWe're pregnant!âÂ
As everyone gathered around Kayo to offer their congratulations, Scott sat on his chair, stunned. I'm gonna be a father? He rested his hand on his jaw, briefly miserable. I'm going to be a father. He brightened. I'm going to be a dadâŚAnd I can have Virgil watch my kid. Smiling, he joined his family.
