The part of Ukrainian wedding is a wonderful tradition with a Wedding sweetbread, called Korovai, decorated with a pastry wheat-ear-shaped wreath. Korovai is seen as a symbol of happiness and affluence, prosperity and also a spousal faithfulness.
Due to the tradition, Clinton and I, as a newlyweds, were met by our parents who were holding Korovai on a Ukrainian ornamented towel. At first, we were invited to find out the head of our new household! For this purpose Clinton and I had to take a bite of the korovai without using our hands. Due to the tradition, whoever takes the large bite is considered to be the head of the new family! :)
Then we were provided salt and invited to take a peace of korovai, put a salt on it and feed each other with these pieces! With this action we agreed to never again “salt” our relationships (meaning not to “create troubles”).
At the end the rest of the korovai was divided among our guests. It is thought that in sharing it with relatives and friends, we were also sharing our happiness :)
