It only took a second for things to go wrong. Tony knew that from experience, really it was just one thing after another in his life. Why could there be some peace around here. They’d just finished a war for fucks sake!

Three Barnes’ stood in the after math, the time stone once again laying on the ground. Tony groaned, dragging a hand down his face in exasperation, these stones were supposed to be handled carefully for this very reason. Unexpected things happen when mortals touched them!

The triplets all snapped their attention to him, in an unnerving display of unison. They were all dazed in a way, but their eyes were definitely on him. He shivered, a feeling of foreboding passing through him. Yeah, he didn’t want to touch that with a fifty foot pole. They were all the same, but very distinctly different, one looked like Sargent James Barnes, Cap’s best friend from The forties. Another was definitely the Winter Soldier based solely on his clothing and hydra’s arm. Yuck. He could do so much better. No! Bad Tony! Don’t think on how to improve the assassin’s arm! The last was clearly the James of the present, a sort of mix between the other two in addition to anything new that was developing.

“Bucky!”

What ever was clouding the minds of the three cleared quickly, all reacting to that name differently. Sargent stiffened up, sneering, eyes narrowed. Soldier widened his stance, looking ready to attack at any second-putting everyone else on alert with him-eyes blazing in cold fury. Barnes frowned, shoulders hunched, arms crossed, curling his body away from Steve in a defensive manner. Tony couldn’t help the frown at their reactions.

Steve took a step towards them, in a flurry of movement Steve was thrown against a far walk, Tony holding the Winter soldier at bay along side Barnes.

“Every body CALM DOWN!” Tony shouted desperately. He did not want to get into another rumble with a super soldier right now...or later for that matter.

Okay let’s be real, he wanted nothing to do with them really. As much as he could forget Barnes for his unwitting hands in his parents murder, didn’t mean tony wanted to be around the man, let alone three of him.

“Let all calm down and think rationally here. We have a problem ie, the three musketeers, now we need to fix this, preferably soon. Strange you’re it’s handler, do you think you can figure this out?”

“I’ll most certainly try. “Answered the man stiffly

“That’s the best I can ask for at this point, thanks Doc. Okay, well all head back to the compound and figure the rest of this out. And clean ourselves up, we stink.”

“Who put Stark in charge.” Clint grumbled defiantly. Natasha smacked him aside the head while Sam frowned at his fellow bird man.

“Listen here bird brain.” Tony stopped ahead of everyone else, having let go of the Soldier during his speech. He turned his head ever so slightly, letting some of his past seep into his voice. The merchant was here, and as much as he hated that part of himself, he was on his last straw. His whiskey eyes glowed, a side effect of extremous. “I have had it, with all of your shit, feel free to go your own way, but as a right now, I head the Avengers and you are international criminals. Come or go, I don’t give a flying fuck any more.” With that he let the suit wrap around him and took off, the flight from Wakanda would be a long one.

Unbeknownst to tony, three men gazed at his retreating figure, all coming to the same conclusion

After CA:CW, once everyone has calmed down a little, Tony somehow ends up helping with Bucky’s recovery/trigger removal. Not in person, but he does give Shuri access to B.A.R.F. and is happy (and excited, let’s be real) to have her improve it however she wants so it can be used to help Bucky get better.

Eventually, once Bucky feels up to it, he contacts Tony. To thank him, and to apologise for Howard and Maria. Tony’s had time to let everything sink in, by that point, so he can honestly tell Bucky that he doesn’t blame him (anymore), and apologises for that day in Siberia. There are a lot of apologies all around, let’s put it like that.

After that first phone call, they keep texting, emailing, and calling sporadically, mostly about Bucky’s recovery and Tony’s attempts to get the ex-Avengers pardoned. At first. The more they talk, though, the more they realise that they actually have a lot in common, and that they get along great.

Soon, they talk almost every day, and Skype/FaceTime whenever they can, crushing hard on each other. (Shuri and Rhodey definitely text about their respective dumb, oblivious white boys.)

Tony, because he’s Tony, probably never would’ve said anything, but Bucky? He grew up poor and gay in the 30s, went to war, got captured by a guy who ended up not having a face, fell off a goddamn train, was captured again, tortured, brainwashed, and experimented on, so, really. Whatever Tony has to say in answer to Bucky’s confession about his feelings? It can’t be worse than what Bucky’s already been through.

But, obviously, Tony’s surprised but happy about it. They officially start a long-distance relationship, which makes them realise they’ve probably already been dating for a while, because the only things that change, really, is that they tell each other, “I love you,” before hanging up, and have lots of phone sex.

They agree to not tell anyone about their relationship yet, though. Because some of their friends probably wouldn’t be entirely happy about it, yes, but mostly because they don’t want to risk it getting out since, officially, Tony has no idea where the fugitive Avengers are, and definitely isn’t helping them in any way whatsoever.

Eventually, though, things are resolved, and the ex-Avengers are allowed to come back to the States. Bucky and Tony are excited to finally meet in person—for real, with no one triggered into Winter Soldier mode, or in a grief-stricken rage this time.

And it’s great for about twenty seconds, while Bucky and Tony smile at each other across the landing pad, but then Steve’s there, and just. Doesn’t go away anymore.

(The first couple of days, both Tony and Bucky begrudgingly accept that Steve pretty much follows them around. It’s the first time in over a year that Steve and Tony get to see each other, and yes, fine, Tony’s pretty happy about them being friends again, too. And yes, sure, Bucky gets it that Steve’s excited about having two of his best friends finally meet properly, and get along.)

(It’s Bucky who snaps eventually, literally shoving Steve out of the elevator on his and Steve’s floor, because, “I love you, Stevie, ya know I do, but if I don’t get Tony’s dick up my ass in the next ten minutes I can’t be held responsible anymore for what I might do. So get the fuck out if you don’t wanna get an eyeful.”)
