@webslingingmenace asked; ❝ gwen's dead ... and i killed her. ❞
okay, so not the revelation stella expects at this time of night. she blinks at peter as the pieces connect at a rapid fire pace, despite her lack of sleep and inability to think coherently. as far as the news outlets were concerned, spider-man was to be blamed for the tragedy that unfolded at the clock tower. the only way for peter to blame himself ... oh. OH. peter, always running off. peter, always bloody and bruised. peter, cancelling plans last minute. peter, ducking out every time there was mention of a fight, or a new villain appearing downtown. peter ... soft, sweet, sentimental, sensitive peter ... was spider-man.
there had been a time in which that revelation would’ve pulled a grin out of her, would’ve made her eyes light up, would’ve had her pestering him with question after question, but right now the only thing it does is SHATTER HER WORLD. the hand on the door tightens, knuckles going white as the fire and fury stir up. she wants to hate him. she wants to want to tear him apart limb from limb. after all, that anger needs an outlet and here he stands giving her the perfect one: how easy would it be to blame peter? how easy would it be to scream until her throat went sore, to shove his shoulders, to funnel every feeling into a storm that couldn’t be stopped directed at him? but easy doesn’t mean right.
she knows him too well to do that. knows that if there’s anyone in the world she trusted to protect gwen with the same ferocity as her...it would be peter. and if he’d failed...well it wouldn’t be due to lack of trying. the fire dies out before it has a chance to start. stella lets out a shaky breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, the tears suddenly bubbling up. peter’s just standing there, waiting for...she isn’t sure what he’s waiting for, actually. but he looks so goddamn guilty and the shattered fragments of her heart ache in her chest. and finally, after a few moments of standing in absolute silence, she moves.
her arms wrap around his shoulders, pulling him close in as tight a hug as she could manage. “it...it wasn’t your fault, petey. it wasn’t your fault.”
