How to Declutter Your Bookmarks (in a Web Browser)
TLDR:
1) Export your bookmarks as an HTML file.
2) Save it somewhere safe.
3) Go back and delete the hell outtaā your bookmarks and folders.
Name the folder whatever you want. Make sure you can find it. Back it up somewhere if itās important enough. Iām sure itās a pretty small file. No, I havenāt done it yet. No, wait I did. Itās like 1300 KB...

(Hey, my desktop isnāt a nightmare! Thatās because putting anything there is useless to me. I just donāt go to my desktop for whatever reason.)
So open your browser. Yeah, see all those tabs? Iāve got five or six other windows with three times as many or more. My phone is even worse. About 100 windows with a 10 to 30 tabs in each one. But thatās later and not at all why weāre here today.
TODAY weāre just going to BACKUP all your BROWSER TABS so you can clean up the bookmarks and folders in your browser. (If your browser doesnāt do this, Iām sorry.)
Follow the link really. I just figured Iād post images to encourage folks.
TBH, I was embarrassed that the solution was this simple.
I just toss them all in a file that leaves my browser altogether.
I can then ruthlessly go through the original bookmarks in my browser and delete dozens with each whack. If any seem like theyāre missing, I can just open the HTMLĀ āarchiveā file and pick and choose whatever I want from it, then get it out of my sight again.Ā
OR I could delete ALL of the bookmarks in my browser and start over clean. Again, IF I want to, I could pick and choose from the HTML archive. If I remember to, Iāll re-blog this with a follow-up.Ā
My goals regardless are to:
Vastly reduce the number of bookmark FOLDERS, and make them useful.Ā
Save new bookmarks more deliberately, in properly nested folders, organized from general to more specific. MyĀ āFINANCIALā folder could have folders like: BANKING, PAYCHECKS, TAXES, etc. Any of those could have folders divided into years. Especially TAXES, right?
BTW, Iām going to do away with the default folders marked:Ā āBookmark Bar,āĀ āMobile Bookmarks,ā andĀ āOther Bookmarks.ā These are just useless distinctions at this point. My top-level folders should relate to my most general interests. I have no idea. It could be: ART, TUMBLR, RESEARCH, etc...
[2022-04-29] 16 days later, and I haven't completed this. I did one download test on some low-importance bookmarks. I found even more old crap links in there. Upside: It helps me really look at the links.
Next: See how loading them back in works out...
AND: Feasibility of separating one group of links into an archive. Taking folders in and out of the browser?
