I'm probably not the only one to say this, but hear me out.
I think that, if people want to have Comic Book movies, they should be separate from the main series. Like, completely exponged from the storyline of the comic. I know some movies already do that, but it seems like, as a rule of thumb, they should be treated as alternate retellings of the storyline.
For example (like everybody points out), the Spider-man trilogy committed several wrongs that went directly against the usual, commonly known "Amazing Spiderman" storylines. Now, I'm not any expert in comics, and I don't read them as much as I should, but it seems like to the average movie viewer, having things in the movie that play out differently than the comic (or TV show for that matter) throw things off.
Like, I'm not the biggest Spidey buff, but I recall Gwen Stacy being his girlfriend. I recall Gwen being dangled from the bridge or whatever, and Gwen dying (because Spider-man didn't know that trying to web somebody from a fall back up snaps their necks.) Now, in the movies, somehow Mary Jane was the one who was the love interest for almost 90% of the time. Now, if they had treated things like an alternate universe, (Like Ultimate Spiderman compared to Amazing) then they would get an entirely free Artistic License to play around with characters as much as they want. I recall watching a youtube video pointing out how JJ. Jameson's son could have been a much better Venom for Spider-Man 3.Â

It seems a bit more realistic and reasonable for him to have been up in space on one of his missions, getting bonded to the symbiote, and the writers writing around that. Spider-man 3 probably wouldn't have had as many complaints about it if they had did it that way.
My point is, they could continue being successfulwhilechanging things to their needs as writers and directors, just by simply making their movies exist within a separate universe than the main ones.
The movies leading up to The Avengers (including The Incredible Hulk) all managed to tell the stories just slightly different than the original comic books, all while tethering each other together in one overlapping overworld. When later movies come out, they can connect them to said movies, or they could be another re-telling of the story. It's how The Amazing Spiderman could connect to the film universe Avengers we have now, while the original Trilogy would not. If they treated the movies like they were just other comics in an alternate retelling/universe, then most people wouldn't have to look at them like "sequals", and they could see them in the same way that people see Ultimate Spider-man in contrast to Amazing.
