The F-35 Lightning II is one of the most complicated weapons systems ever developed, a sleek and stealthy fighter jet years in the making that is often called a flying computer because of its more than 8 million lines of code. The Joint Strike Fighter comes in three versions, including one that is designed to take off and land on an aircraft carrier and another that lands vertically, as if it…

Helicopters get robotic guns
Normally, we would not touch weapons over here at Coolest Gadgets but this particular one is way too good to pass up. I am referring to Israel-based Duke Airborne Systems’ Robotic Weapon System (RWS). The Robotic Weapon System was first unveiled over at the Eurosatory defense industry show in Paris, where this particular system was touted to be a “first-of-its-kind” system by virtue of being a…

History of Weapons and their Uses
A wide variety of weapons are found around the world. Though leading up to The Fall, a global trend toward firearms as the primary weapon for all purposes was noted, scarce availability of ammunition and the appearance of beasts resistant to firearm damage since the disaster led to the revival of more "primitive" technology.
Firearms are still popular, as they can't be beaten for their power:speed ratio and convenience. However, as they do need specialized ammunition, bows are often used instead, as it is easier for one to make their own arrows than bullets.
Swords are also regaining popularity, after having so long been relegated to the worlds of history and fantasy. They are most commonly used by larger people who can better withstand a hit, should they fail to defend themselves well enough. Smaller, untrained individuals typically use light polearms - which have become a fixture in near every home since The Fall, due to their relative safety for bladed weapons, ease of use, and elegant, non-distracting appearance. Daggers and other small knives are also common for self defense.
Less popular, but still regaining importance are hammers and maces, battleaxes, and throwing knives and other thrown blades. Hammers and maces are nearly a necessity, however, if you venture out near the crater, as some of the creatures there are extremely hostile and difficult to fight off without the use of crushing forces.
Staves and rods are used mainly by elves; humans use them at times if an improvised weapon is necessary, but their real strength is in amplifying magic - if they're made right. This is an art that humans have yet to figure out.
These are the most common items intended as weapons, but improvised weapons are also used as necessary. Anything from chainsaws to pizza boxes have been noted for use as weapons, in the uncertain times of the past 150 years.

Technical Stuff: The Weapons System
The weapons system is one of my own design. Well, sort of. I'm sure someone else has thought of and implemented it before, but I haven't had the pleasure of playing a game such as that.
There are multiple classes of weapons, including but not limited to swords, maces, guns, bows, rods and staves, polearms, fist weapons, and thrown weapons. Each character starts off with at least one, and up to three, that they are at least proficient enough with to not hurt themselves.
Your skill level with a weapon increases as you use it. As your skill level increases, you get a damage multiplier with that type of weapon equipped, as well as an accuracy bonus.
Any character can use any weapon, regardless of which one/s they start with. While each character's stats are geared toward efficiency with their "native" weapons, there will be times when using a different one is recommended or even necessary.
Certain enemies are more resistant to damage from certain kinds of weapons. Some enemies can only be damaged effectively by bladed weapons, while others can only be damaged by projectiles or blunt weapons.
Each character can equip up to three weapons at a time and can switch between them at will in battle - though this will have a speed penalty. Any additional weapons can be kept in network storage (which will be another post).
One more thing: Remember how I mentioned that each character will have at least one weapon type that they are proficient enough with not to hurt themselves?
For the rest of the types, they start at skill level 0. At skill level 0, you're just as likely to hurt yourself as you are to hurt an enemy. At level 1, you can still hurt yourself, but it's not as likely. It's at level 2 that you're considered "safe".
Don't worry though - the damage is minor and this doesn't last long enough to make watching your characters shoot themselves or their party members in the foot stop being funny.
