Autumn arrives and with it Madeleine’s eighteenth birthday. Thankfully Daphne is still here to celebrate, she’d decided not to move back home due to the depression and will instead be moving to the city in a few weeks. Reuben, Eugene and Daphne were committed to making this the best birthday Madeleine had ever had; they put up balloons, Eugene meticulously wrapped up her gifts and Daphne and Reuben baked a chocolate cake- Madeleine’s favourite. All was going fantastically.

Then Reuben sends Madeleine to get some more film for the camera. “It’s in the last drawer, don’t make me come find it myself,” Reuben said, so Madeleine obediently emptied out the drawer. However, she found something else . It was a small scrap of paper that she would have ignored normally but today she read it.

Dear Reuben,

Please do not think too harshly of me...

The letter was from her Maman! Papa had always said Maman died while giving birth to her and he was present at her birth but this letter said otherwise. If Papa had lied then Maman was alive.

Madeleine, who’d never been a patient soul, immediately ran out to the kitchen and erupted at Reuben. She couldn’t believe he’d lied about this her whole life, he knew how she longed for her Maman’s love and he’d robbed her of it.

Daphne, who was much experienced with parents hiding things from you, comforted Madeleine that evening.

“Who knows, your mother could still be out there and at least you know her name now.”

The cogs turned in Madeleine’s head. Yes, Maman,( well maybe she should call her Nicole) , could still be out there and she’d have a much better chance of finding her in the city.

Today is supposed to be a big happy day but I feel so tired and honestly just depressed :(

#we're moving #not even very far and life is supposed to get better now #i just feel miserable about it though somehow #i mean... it is the third time ive moved this year... tyat might be why

have a snippet... as a treat...

"I don't like him."

Maddie snorts. "You haven't even met him, Buck."

"I know," he mutters. Is it fair to judge someone he hasn't met? Maybe not. But Buck likes to think of himself as a pretty decent judge of character, and Eddie? "He just… gives off a vibe."

"A vibe? And what vibe is that?"

"It's…" Buck glances back to where Eddie is sitting, listening intently to whatever… wild story Lena is spinning from her daredevil days (not that she still isn't a daredevil), and he doesn't know why but he hates him. "He just… gives off "I'm hot and I know it" vibes," he says, eyes tracking the way Eddie rubs his palms along the inside of his thighs, "it's douche-y of him."

She tries, and fails, to stifle her laughter.

The bar is loud but her laughter seems louder and logically, he knows Eddie can't hear her laughing from where he's at but for some reason he chooses that exact moment to look over. And Buck feels his cheeks heating up in embarrassment as their eyes meet for a brief second before he ducks his head.
