WE WON’T BITE The Zeus Gallery 21 June – 5July 2018 Opening Reception 20 June 6 -8:30pm What began as an opportunity to revel in the wildness of folkloric storytelling and some of its taboos have instead become a love letter to the beauty of the animal within us all. WE WON’T BITE brings together the work of Antoinette Ratcliffe, Mica Still, Natasha Cousens and Ani Fourie, celebrating their affinity with the animal world, through sculpture, installation, photography and painting. The artists all share a proliferation of transmorphic forms and themes based on wild and domestic animals, as well as the more fantastical shape shifting critters of fable and science fiction. The animals brought together in WE WON’T BITE are represented in a richly allegorical visual narrative, referencing notions of beauty, the self and the ephemeral nature of life itself. They are as Tennyson would have it, red in tooth and claw, but possess too a whimsy which does not detract from their wildness and ferocity if provoked. WE WON’T BITE, if you don’t.
