What Lies Below:
“Come, eat something. We’ll talk.” The prince straightened tugging Isaac from the floor. Isaac nodded but kept his gaze averted. Regardless of the prince’s reassurances, Isaac felt it safer to show respect. The prince pulled Isaac away from the door as it swung open. One of the pirates Isaac had seen when boarding the ship carried a tray of fruit to the small table and left without so much as a glance in their direction. “It’s the only time we get fresh fruit. When we come to port.” The prince released Isaac and turned his full attention to the fruit, circling the tray once before settling in one of the two chairs. He indicated to the other with a nod of his head and Isaac sat. “Please, eat what you like.”
The Games We Play:
Benjamin frowned, handing Nathaniel his discarded jacket. “That boy they caught last night, he's to go in the arena against more than a dozen infected.” “Who authorized that?” “The Master of the house.” Nathaniel clenched his jaw. The boy hadn't done anything wrong. “Johnathan goes too far.” “I don't think there is anything you can do, Master. Master Montgomery has been embarrassed, by a slave no less. Other families will talk if he does nothing.”
Dark Magic:
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Zach whipped around, dropping his hands from the collar. Lukas leaned against the door watching Zach with that same unnerving intensity. “It’s rigged to poison you if you try to remove it by force. Didn’t anyone tell you that?” Zach shook his head. Lukas’s expression soured. “I’ll have to have a word with the wardens,” he continued. He scanned the small cell, his eyes stopping at the bench with the untouched food on it. “You’re not eating?” The wardens had brought Zach several plates of food since he arrived, and he’d only touched the first. After being violently sick Zach hadn’t trusted anything they gave him. He really didn’t want more trouble from them, so he shook his head, opting to stay quiet. “Why?” Lukas pushed. Zach stayed silent hoping he'd get the hint.
Breathless:
A face he recognised glanced in his direction. Josh hid his face behind a hand, hoping Eli hadn't seen him. The door swung open and cold air rushed through with the newcomer. Josh didn't bother looking up from his untouched food.
Someone tapped his right shoulder. Josh turned his head and frowned at the empty space. He turned back around, coming face to face with Eli and jumped, swearing under his breath.
Eli raised an amused eyebrow, his mouth quirking slightly. “You know, it's rude to ignore the person who saved your life.”
Josh struggled to slow his racing heart. Of all the places Eli could have gone that morning, he had to choose the one place Josh was. “I wasn’t--”
“Looked like you were.”
The Day We Die:
Jamie thanks whatever luck he has that Colby doesn’t turn around again. Heat’s rising in his cheeks and he’s sure Colby would tease him about it if he saw.Â
A cool breeze picks up just as Jaime scoots forward and wraps his arms around Colby, sending a shiver down his spine and he hears Colby chuckle lightly.
“Lean your weight with me, okay?” Jamie tenses at that. If Colby notices he doesn’t say anything.Â
The bike comes to life underneath them and Jamie lifts his feet from the ground. Unsure where to put them, he moves them to the only place that feels natural. Colby revs the engine and they jolt forward, it’s all Jamie can do to hold on and not scream bloody murder.Â
