Institute for Entrepreneurship the New "Home" of World Creativity and Innovation Week

World Creativity and Innovation Week (WCIW) was created in 2001 as a single day - April 15, to coincide with Leonardo DaVinci’s birthday. Founder Marci Segal hoped it would become a day for institutions and individuals to celebrate the creative spirit. Over the years, the idea gained momentum, and the day grew into a week, starting on DaVinci’s birthday and ending on April 21, and celebrated around the world.

Today, Marci Segal has passed the creative flame to Miami University’s Institute for Entrepreneurship, transferring stewardship of the concept, web presence and intellectual property to the Institute.

The University’s connection to WCIW dates back to 2012, when creativity and Innovation professor Dr. Jim Friedman learned of WCIW and decided to integrate the celebration into his creativity course with the challenge to “celebrate WCIW in some way.” The idea took root and grew into an annual weeklong celebration including a pop up “Creativity City” ideated, constructed and manned by creativity students and other creatives from across the university. The “city” has grown in size and sophistication over the years, drawing students, faculty, staff, community and news media.

Friedman explained, “The Institute for Entrepreneurship is committed to empowering and teaching everyone to harness the tremendous power of creativity. We are honored to be given the opportunity to continue Marci’s legacy and promote and educate the world about the importance of applied creativity. While we celebrate World Creativity and Innovation Week for seven days, we live it daily.”

WCIW provides an opportunity to teach, share, and grow creativity as a necessary skill and an important part of life. WCIW is unique because each participating community celebrates in their own way. It is a chance for the creative community to grow as we reinvigorate what it means to live everyday creatively. Celebrations vary from meetings and conversations to workshops and festivals. All celebrations have been in the effort to leverage impactful creative action in a meaningful way for each community.

World Creativity and Innovation Week, started by Marci Segal, is happening now, April 15-21, and the United Nations has recognized April 21st as World Creativity and Innovation Day every year! Celebrate with us, and read about this year’s themes for world creative problem-solving and innovation:
