Today marks a very special occasion in both my professional and personal life. For the very first time I will be travelling to Canada, I place I've been yearning for since I was a small child. On one hand I'm excited to see the sights and sounds and to eat the maple syrup and say eh and aboot a lot. All stereotyping aside though this is the culmination of a desire, a tick on the bucket list and potentially the start of something more. On the other hand my reason for visiting Canada comes in the form of a scientific presentation. The World Biomaterials Congress is being held in Montreal and will be a chance for the leading researchers, scientists, industry big wigs and earnest students to showcase what they've got and what they know. For me personally though I'm just hoping not to get lost! My friend and I have decided to get an early start on travelling, arriving eagerly at the airport 3 hours early, having not slept for 24 hours already and with another 18 hours of travel to go it's going to be an interesting time. My inability to sleep on public transport aside, scientific reasoning and childlike curiosity are a powerful thing, and probably more mentally stimulating than the black, syrup thick coffee I like to think I need to get me going. This scientist is tired but excited, and full of Burger King. All things considered it could be much worse.
