Smosh is sooo bad at PR it's almost impressive. The first thing any crisis PR company would tell you is get in front of the narrative and be as transparent as legally possible. Smosh has done the exact opposite of both those things every single time there is a crisis. It's no wonder their audience has so little trust in them!
Even if we're not talking about crises, transitions also need to be handled well lest they become a crisis. At the moment, if I didn't keep up with anthony's stories about his mental struggles, I would not have a high opinion of him. It looks like he's abandoned the company again and it also looks like he's not interested. I'm basing this on what he's said about not being confident as an entertainer and then doing absolutely nothing to remedy that. We have Ian going to improv classes and doing stand-up while anthony is travelling and getting high. Because I've seen his stories about healing his inner child, I know he is working hard, but to people who don't follow him closely it just looks like he's lazy. That in turn leads to more negativity towards him which probably makes him less confident about coming back - and it's completely avoidable! If they'd been a bit more up front about him taking some time off and said he had some personal issues to attend to, there would be much more understanding in the fandom.
Smosh is their own worst enemy istg
I have to agree with this
I was talking about this with someone else here and i gave a comparison, probably wrong but it reminded me on how both companies handle things. Which is comparing Smosh to the Try Guys
Going beyond the Ned case and the Noah/Keith case i gave the "comparison" between Eugene and Anthony
Eugene has been less and less in content cause he has been busy doing something else (i think he is planning on doing a movie and a book) but because of the Ned drama he continued to appear in content while the company slowly introduced other casts to their audience and when Eugene could "let go" (meaning not being in content much but still being part of the company as one of the shareholders/owners), they all explained to the audience what was happening to both Eugene and the Channel and the response was good cause the new cast was welcomed and they all showed loved to Eugene for his next endeavor
Now Anthony has been back for a year now, they have made content, sketches, livestreams, live shows and it all seems to be "back to normal" or at least back to what it was (energy wise cause the channels did went through a natural growth compared to what they were back in 2017).
Everyone at Smosh shared their feeling in seeing the channel back "as a whole" and having such big cast brought more strength to the channel (since it wasn't only on Ian and Anthony's shoulders but also shared with everyone else) but somehow Anthony's presence kept on decreasing and we don't "really know" why.
We do know that Anthony is having some sort of healing/journey about his mental health (but not from him directly but from his social which cannot be as reliable as having the issue being spoken by the person in question and also cause IG stories gets deleted after 24h so if you are not quick enough or don't follow him, you could miss context)
I would have loved for Anthony to have said (or even write if he doesn't feel comfortable doing a video) to the audience that "since he is going through a bit of a rough time mentally he would have taken a step back from both Smosh and his own channel and when things finally start to be better, he would be back with the audience and the Cast and Crew".
I know that the situation between Anthony and Eugene is different but the Try Guys have always been as forthcoming to their audience as possible while Smosh feels like a guessing game most of the time.
I try to be as understanding and as positive as possible but at times, even a little bit of openess can go a long way. Cause sure Anthony he is going through some personal journey but he is still a "public person" with a very public channels and i'm not expecting/want of them to share everything (cause when they did, it ended up badly) but at least give us a tiny bit of information. Maybe not the reason why but at least "hey i'm dealing with something, nothing bad but it is getting my focus away from the channels and i need to deal with this before getting back to work 100%"
Cause when an audience is left to its own, speculations and assumptions began to spread and since the fandom is pretty big, each and every single person gets into a small "echo chamber", that could end up validating whatever they think "Anthony is going through", and the line between what you know and what you assume gets thinner and thinner until it dissolves completely
What i'm trying to say is: at times, you need to build a brigde with your audience that goes a bit further then just silence. I don't wanna know their business but if one of the two owners suddenly "disappears", i wouldn't mind at least a little nugget of news from the person in question XD
