‘His blessing (water) was pretty much wiped out by the king’s orders a couple years after he was born. The Bracken’s, the shadow-blessed clan that took over the water-blessed’s territory, took him in, assuming he was a non-water-blessed baby that was orphaned by the widespread massacre.
He became very good friends with the Bracken leader’s daughter, Gail. Around age 12, the Bracken leader discovered that Kai was water-blessed. An accident revealed that Kai's blood was pitch-black. Kai was essentially banished that night and sent away without being told why. Bracken leader feared a similar fate to the water-blessed if it was found out he was harboring Kai. Kai ends up being found by an outlaw group who take him in and help him. The outlaw group, the Red Crows, end up growing into a formidable foe to the king, with Kai as a key member.'
