Skipper Dee and her awesome crew are highlighting the plastic crisis our world #oceans are facing, whilst taking part in a mega #sailing race across the globe. Double cool. Along the way they are collecting #watersamples in remote oceans, with new data revealing microplastics from THE FURTHEST POINT FROM LAND ON EARTH - WHERE THE NEAREST HUMANS ARE ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. Hard to comprehend right? There’s more: The highest levels of #microplastic found so far, 357 particles per cubic metre were found in a sample taken in the South China Sea, east of Taiwan, an area that feeds into the Great Pacific Ocean Gyre. This critical data shows just how far and wide plastic has sadly #polluted our world oceans. . . Anne-Cecile Turner, Sustainability Programme Leader for the Volvo Ocean Race, says: “Such information is extremely valuable as it helps fill in the large gaps in our understanding of how plastic breaks down over a number of years and is spread to the ends of the earth by ocean currents. It’s also a stark reminder of the pressing need to tackle this #plasticcrisis head on and governments, businesses and individuals all have a role to play in addressing the problem.” . . And remember, all plastic from landfills eventually end up in rivers and oceans - if you live inland it’s sometimes hard to grasp problems happening in the ocean…but most of the oxygen you breathe comes from organisms in the ocean. More than half of the oxygen you breathe comes from marine photosynthesisers, like #phytoplankton and seaweed. Both use carbon dioxide, water and energy from the sun to make food for themselves, releasing oxygen in the process. In other words, they #photosynthesise. And they do it in the ocean.
