Sweating the Glass
It's raining like hell and you still have to go on deck when you're on watch? Not very nice, but unfortunately every watch had to be committed, no matter what the weather was like. But now there were two tricks to end the watch more quickly (without feigning illness or injury). the old sailors swore to heat the glass, the hourglass that indicated watch, especially in the neck region, sweating the glass. This expanded the glass a little and the sand flowed a bit faster. The other method was flogging the glass. This meant shaking the glass quickly so that the sand flowed faster. However, don't get caught doing this, or you'll be the one who gets flogged instead of the poor hourglass.
