pondering a version of canon!shane who has a wasian lived experience like what he’s often given in fanon, i.e. very in touch with his japanese heritage and it just… isn’t mentioned in canon because it’s not particularly notable to shane or ilya who are pretty laser focused on other stuff (hockey, each other, etc.) and it isn’t a big deal to yuna and david who have built a beautiful wasian life together, which is I think can be seen as empowering in its own right in the sense that it doesn’t compound the othering of shane that does happen for other reasons in canon… but also pondering a shane has a wasian lived experience very similar to my own where his wasian-ness goes unaddressed because he exists in predominantly PWIs which are afraid to partake in the othering of shane which they know is “not PC” but in doing so fail to embrace part of him…. pondering this version of shane when the metros find out he’s gay… where his wasian identity always been something shane cultivated with yuna and her family but not with david and his family… pondering that shane who is so used to compartmentalizing certain parts of him that isolating ilya and their love from hockey is second nature by TLG…
