You and Ryan had grown up together and now went to the same highschool, but this didn’t mean you two were best friends. Sure, you got along and occasionally texted or talked in the halls.. But he wasn’t your best friend.
And you were 14 when you realized maybe he wasn’t just some boy you knew since you were little, which is how this liking started. But Ryan usually always had a girlfriend and you’d never ever get in between that.
So throwing yourself into school and soccer made it easier for you to not think about the boy. What you didn’t know was that Ryan felt the same way. He’s basically liked you his entire life, ever since he realized he COULD like you.
But when you didn’t give him the attention he wanted he thought you didn’t feel the same way, and turned around to date random girls to satisfy him.
Now at 16, your life had been going so good. Great friends, star student, and a great player on the soccer field. Ryan was now slowly becoming just a friend again, so you decided you’d give another boy your time. Jacob, a basketball player at your school.
A year older, kind, good looking, but a little dumb. Not that you minded, you knew this wasn’t going to last forever. And at the final soccer game of the season, half the school was there to watch and cheer you on. Ryan, his girlfriend, and Jacob included.
After winning, you rushed over to where the three unfortunately all sat together, wrapping your arms around Jacob’s neck and kissing him with a smile. Ryan tensed beside his girlfriend, which went unnoticed by the pretty girl. He hated Jacob, hated the way he kissed you, hugged you, loved you, when it was supposed to be him.
“You came!” You say grinning, letting your smile grow wider as the boy handed you a bouquet. “Of course I did, you looked amazing out there!” Jacob said, even happier. As if he had just won the game himself. Ryan stood up, arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders, moving over to you two.
“Hey congrats.” He said, like being here was wasting his time. He didn’t mean to sound so rude, it just happened. You smile dropped a little at his tone, worried but brushed it off. “Thank you, and thanks for coming!”
By the end of the night, Ryan and his girlfriend sat in his car outside of her house. And he couldn’t take it anymore, the jealousy, the lying, the front he was putting up. So he ended things, telling her that it just wasn’t a good time for him dating. She cried and ran inside, which made Ryan feel awful but a weight was now lifted off his shoulders. Deciding that the best thing was to drive straight to your house.
When you opened your door after frantic knocks, you raised an eyebrow, surprised at seeing Ryan at your door so late. “Oh- Hey Ryan..? Everything ok?” You asked, but invited him inside.
“I have something to tell you. And I know you’re with someone, but I broke up with my girlfriend tonight because I couldn’t take it anymore. And I know it’s wrong of me to say this but I wish you’d end things with Jacob. I like you, I always have. I can’t see myself NOT liking you. I don’t want you to start ignoring me if you don’t feel the same, because I think it’d kill me if I couldn’t have you. Even as just as a friend..” He said, in one breath and too fast to understand. But you did.
You stared at Ryan, mouth opened in shock, eyes widened. Then sat down on the couch behind you to try and steady yourself. “I.. I.. don’t know to say..” You say, words stumbling over each other. “Just please say you feel the same..” Ryan selfishly said.
“I have a boyfriend.. This is unfair, to me, to you, to Jacob. Who I love very much.. But especially that poor girl whose heart you broke for me! I- I did like you, for years. But you always had a girlfriend, and i’d rather stay quiet than ruin anyone relationship.. So I stayed away, and those feelings went away. I-I think you’re just not thinking properly” You say, finally managing to get something out.
“I would’ve left anyone for you.. Why- Why did you wait..?” “Why would I want that..? To be the girl that ruined some other girls relationship?” You say, slightly offended by the mere thought of it.
“Please give me a chance to show you that you deserve better than Jacob! That I’ll give you that!”Ryan begged, now on his knees in front of you. You shook your head and stood up, putting distance between you two.
“You need to go.” you said, trying not to cry. And he did, giving you the space you wanted and needed. Making sure you knew he’d be here whenever you were finally down with Jacob.
