This time we talk about water transfers.
As always my hubris has gotten the better of me and the Warsuit is taking a little longer than expected. In the meantime however I wanted to go over my experience learning how to apply water transfers.
When I first started the hobby I bought about 1000 points of Raven Guard and thought that I wouldn’t have to buy the upgrade sprews just for the shoulders and could use the water transfers. I remember when I was much younger and enjoying building and painting Salamanders that water transfers weren’t so hard but boy was I wrong.
Because the truth of the matter is that they’re not really water transfers are they they need a solution to actually stay on the model. So I did a bit of research and found the two kinds of water transfer solutions. Tamiya Markfit and Micro Set/ Sol.
For ally my transfers I’ve just been using the Tamiya Mark Fit and it works perfectly. I discovered later that you can put a thin layer of Citadels Technical Stormshield over it to knock that sheen down a bit.
I tried using Micro Set/Sol and could not get the stuff to work. It would rub my paint off while trying to place the transfer and it never felt like it was really sticking. I know a lot of people have had success with it and if anyone has pointers for me I’d greatly appreciate it. In the mean time Mark Fit is definitely doing the trick.
On top of all that a little bit of progress photos on the Warsuit and how I think transfers can be applied the most painlessly.
I’m not in love with how thin the green band is on the arm but I didn’t have an sure fire way to ensure the tape was parallel without using the side of the shoulder plate. In the future I will use pieces of the same tape to give me the width that I want on the inside, line up tape on the outside next to the desired width tape and remove the inside pieces. Otherwise putting transfers on during the basing stage means you can help blend them a little more with washes and weathering as opposed to doing all that hard work and then having clean crisp squad symbols.
Here’s what we look like when we’re all done with base colors and we have the desired look more or less. A couple things to keep in mind; washes over transfers will change their colors pretty substantially I recommend using a glaze of the wash itself or of white after the wash, painting the outside of the transfer will help blend the edge of the transparency, and painting over transparencies isn’t a bad thing but it’s going to look a bit more thick so if you have to paint over them make sure to use paints that are as thin as possible.
As a sneak peak I’ve decided to go with a very battle worn army and plan on doing a lot of weathering. I might have gone a little overboard this first time out but I do ultimately like the look of the battle hardened trench fighters being locked in combat for weeks.
