AT THE BUZZER! My 2014 TOP 5 Straggler movies of the year.

I got caught up on a buttload of movie watching over the holiday season, and I'm sure that many of the films I've seen would have made my top 10 of the year. Rather than revising the whole kitten kaboodle I'll just rank these newbies. 

1. Top Five: I know this looks dubiously apropros, as there are but 5 items on this list, but (now I'm quoting myself from my Facebook) "I don't know if it was all the yule tidings or the fact that I saw it amongst an ultra-raucous 10 pm movie theater audience, but I thought Chris Rock's Top Five was totally hysterical and maybe the funniest movie of the year." For serious, I've never seen a theatre erupt like that. 

2. They Came Together. I can't explain why it took me so long to see this film by the same people that made my favorite movie of the decade (2000-2010). And, no it wasn't nearly as great as Wet hot American Summer (that is a high bar indeed.) but They Came Together left me satisfied with a tummy full of belly laughs regardless, and wanting to watch it again immediately to catch the jokes I was too busy laughing over.

3. The One I Love: Duplass Bro's very funny feature length Twilight Zone episode. I highly recommend.

4. Coherence: Hey, if you call your science fiction dinner party movie about intersecting universes "Coherence" it better damn well be, lest you face the wrath of nerdom.... As far as my feeble mind could tell, it was, and to great mind-boggling effect. One pretty great performance in this movie, also a lot of terrible ones, I'm looking at you Nicholas Brendon AKA Xander from Buffy.

5. 20,000 days on Earth. This Nick Cave Docudrama (I'm not sure if I'm using that word correctly, it's hard to tell how much of this was scripted ) was moody and captivating and occasionally delightful... Tonally, seemed to borrow heavily from The Jim Jarmusch playbook, and I wish they showed more early performances, but hey: when you're in Nick Cave country you play by Nick Cave's rules and you're gonna like it.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Funniest “action movie” I have seen.

2. Obvious Child: Funniest “comedy” I have seen in a long time.

3. Nightcrawler: L.A. is best at night.

4. Boyhood: Adolescence is best over the course of 12 years.

5. Jodorowsky's Dune: Salvador Dali was gonna be in it?!?!? WHAT!

6. Big Hero 6: “Science, YEAAAH!”

7. Birdman: Where you been all your life, Keaton?

8. Edge of Tomorrow: Where you been all your deaths, Cruise?

9. Gone Girl: Where'd that lady go?

10. Blue Ruin: Good thriller is good, and True Detective-y

TV:

True Detective: I wish people rented more “Flat Circles”(DVDs) from the store this year.

Hot Package: The brain behind TV CARNAGE made an Entertainment Tonight spoof with Pat O'Brien as HIMSELF. It's my fever dream show come true.

Getting On: End of life humor is the new frontier for comedy.

The Walking Dead Season 5 part 1: Pretty good season so far, and I fully expect it to be boring again soon.

Broad City Season 1: Funnier than Girls.

Girls Season 3: Drama-y-er than Broad City, but still a super funny season.

Game of Thrones Season 4. I'm glad I'm not playing this game. Just doesn't seem safe.

Boardwalk Empire The Final Season: Good work everyone.

Review Season 1: Comedy Central killed it this year.

HOMESTAR RUNNER IS BACK: I know not technically a TV Show but it has to go somewhere.

EDIT! I forgot about Silicone Valley!!!! That would have been way up there in the TV section. Love that show. 

EDIT #2!!! I SOMEHOW FORGOT ABOUT FARGO!! That goes right below True Detective. I loved it so much.

What It Was Like Behind the Counter at On 15th Video

There was something about walking through the door of a video store that made most people instantly forget every movie they ever wanted to see. As employees, we were keenly aware of this brand of amnesia...

I've been trying to figure out what this was from for as long as I can remember. Seriously, It's one of my earliest memories and it stuck with me because it was way too disturbing for six-year-old me to be baring witness. Turns out it was from an episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color: Bride of Mr. Boogedy

This trailer for The Homesman has my name written all over it. Almost ten years ago, Tommy Lee Jones: the director won my heart with The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. 'Bout time he did another! Oh and  throw Jesse Plemons in there? DONE DEAL!
