How to Transform Basic Clothes into Statement Pieces

I’ve always loved fashion, but I also believe that you don’t need to buy expensive pieces to make a statement. Over the years, I’ve found that some of my most stylish outfits come from simple, everyday clothes that I’ve customized and styled in unique ways. Fashion should be fun and expressive, and with a little creativity, you can turn basic pieces into something truly special.

One of my favorite ways to refresh a plain outfit is by adding small details that make a big impact. I love using embroidery or patches on my denim jackets and tote bags—it instantly gives them character and a personal touch. I’ve also experimented with fabric paint, creating abstract designs or hand-painting quotes on t-shirts to turn them into wearable art. It’s such a simple yet effective way to make something unique.

Sometimes, all a basic piece needs is a little alteration to make it feel fresh and trendy. I often take old hoodies or tees and crop them for a modern silhouette, giving them a completely new look. Distressed denim is another go-to trick of mine—I love ripping and fraying the edges of jeans or jackets to create a cool, street-style effect. These little tweaks make a huge difference without much effort.

Accessories can completely change the vibe of an outfit, and I always rely on them to make a statement. A bold necklace or a pair of chunky earrings can transform even the simplest outfit, while a printed scarf wrapped around my hair or bag adds a fun pop of color. Layering is another game-changer for me—whether it’s cinching an oversized shirt with a statement belt or mixing casual and dressy pieces, like a graphic tee with a sequined skirt, I’ve learned that unexpected combinations often turn heads.

For me, fashion is all about creativity and confidence. You don’t need a huge budget to make an impact—just an open mind and a willingness to experiment. Whether you’re giving an old favorite a new life or trying out a bold styling trick, the key is to have fun and embrace your unique style.

Meet Keenan: Another badass babe in my life!  Not only is she a great Project Manager/Musician/former amazing trailer shop owner/owner of many amazing vintage things and style/amazing cook, etc. but she is having me revamp her wardrobe. AND IT IS FUN.  

She has excellent taste in vintage garments and fabrics, and a year+ ago I made a fit and flare pattern that fit her like a dream.  

The patterns contained:

+dress with different necks and sleeves

+Top: Fitted bodice (sloper) and Knit Crop top modification

+A simple circle skirt pattern with different skirt length modifications

Since then we have been building up and venturing out, but I have been having so much fun making feminine frocks for such a fabulous lady.  She is NOT afraid of color and trusts me in improvising....(Can I just say, YUSSSS) Also the vintage alterations I’ve done for her are so dreamy! She has a knack for picking up great pieces.  I’m working on putting together a photo project of all her outfits one we get there, but there’s still quite a bit to go! 

I love getting to redo people’s wardrobes and help with fit. It’s what I miss most about teaching pattern making and Sloper classes, to be honest! When clothes fit you well, you feel good and exude confidence.   

Helping Keenan in her custom vintage wardrobe really has me thinking about simplifying and updating mine as well! For the first time in my life I’ve had the urge to purge (haa) most things in my closet for a daily uniform and few core pieces made out of different woven and stretch fabrics.  This is a new epiphany! 

THEIR EVERYWHERE!!!

Every now and then we seem to be haunted by those unwanted items in the back of our closets. The items we wish to get rid of, but our will power won't allow a proper parting.  Some may hold sentimental value while others may just be space filler. Living in New York City, you are at the luxury of knowing how important space is, especially when it comes to your closet. There is no room for an item that you no longer desire to wear to take up the smallest amount of space. Pieces like these I refer to as the "HAUNTED"!

This summer I experienced the “HAUNTED”!  I had a few items that I hadn't featured in a moment or that just lacked the fashion aesthetic I had recently become accustomed to. I went back and forth contemplating on what to do with those threads I once was so fond of.  I began to think, “These items must be PURGED!" But then it hit me, I had a solution, I had a way to make those dated items disappear and give birth to new fashion life. It genuinely came to me like an epiphany! The best possible solution would be to make the items look current and fashion forward as possible. I did just that…

HAUNTED #1

I have a Forever21 sweatshirt I no longer appreciated the fit of. I decided to cut the sides open, inserting zippers as most designers are now incorporating sweatshirts with zippers this fall.  I also cropped the length of sleeves to resemble a t-shirt. Not only did the revamping process transform the look drastically, but I had updated my wardrobe with a new statement piece without breaking my piggy bank.

HAUNTED #2

I have a YSL Vintage 3 piece suit that has always been ill-fitting and with the recent weight loss, I wanted to do something with the suit that would mirror my fun and daring personality. There was a thought of getting it tailored, so I decided to tailor it. After being tailored I still thought, this isn't me, how can I make this "HEIR" like. So while glancing over at the scissors on my sewing table, I decided to turn the suit into a short suit which was a major hit this year at NYFW.
