@wanderingthunderstorm there's a really good sequence of songs Maynard wrote through all three of his bands about his mother's struggles
in chronological order of the story:
"Jimmy" by TOOL is about when he was 14 and his mother Judith had a stroke that left her paralyzed
"Judith" by APC is a rage at how much her condition debilitated her and how he can't believe she keeps her deeply held religious faith despite what God did to her. "He did it all for you."
Pretty much all of TOOL's 10,000 Days album because that's how long she lived from her stroke to her death, but specifically "Wings For Marie" parts 1 and 2
some people say "Jambi" is about her too but it's up for debate
as a coda, I would add "Agostina" by Puscifer, which is more specifically about the birth of his daughter but he invokes all the important women in his life in the song, not just his daughter Agostina but his wife Lei Li and his mother Judith Marie are critical parts of the lyricism. For me this song is sort of a peace he makes with the painful experience with his mother. He loves his wife and he is meeting his daughter and there's a hopefulness that Agostina will have a better life than Judith did, and gratitude toward Lei Li for giving her the give of the child.
Maynard's lyricism is sometimes difficult if you're not deep in the lore but I love the through-lines of these songs, but "Judith" really is the fuckin' banger of bangers
