Mathew Wampe Indian

Mathew Wampe’s mark appears as witness to a deed transacted by Josiah Wampatuck and George Wampe. We’ve seen it also transcribed or spelled as Mathias Wampe or Mathe Wampe.

The deed describes “...a tract of land containing three miles + a halfe mile square…lying and being between two rivers in the Nipmug Country…and knowne…by the name Tohkecommumwachcuck.” The land is exchanged for “great good will and respect, …and many curtesies time to time heretofore rece’d" to two white settlers in the area.

Josiah Wampatucks marke

Wampatuck, or Josiah or Josias Wampatuck, or Josiah or Josias Chickataubut. Massachusett. Sachem at Mattakeesett, in areas near and around the places today called “Scituate, Massachusetts,” “Hingham, Massachusetts,” “Marshfield, Massachusetts,” etc. and south of so-called “Boston, Massachusetts.”

Wampatuck’s kin: Son of Chickataubut (or Obtakiest), nephew to Cutshamekin. 

This document addresses land at present day “Scituate, Massachusetts,” bounded by the mouth of the North River, to Accord pond. The original is dated to 1653.
