Walking At Night
I’d like to climb up onto a roof, Where I can see everyone, And no one else knows, So I can think about you, And me, And us, And why I can’t fix any of this stuff.
I’d like to squeeze into a secret spot, And be left alone, Just me and my thoughts, To think about me, Who I am, Who I’m not, And hope that somewhere, You’re out there, Alone with your thoughts, And I hope that the silence, isn’t enough.
If the stars were out, I’d lie at the fifty yard line, To stare at Orion And talk to his Maker, For his Creator and mine, Are one and the same, But instead there’s a drizzle, And a light creeping fog.
It’s miserably romantic, This night-time sight, And I’m a miserable romantic, Walking at night, Just waiting for a new morning’s light, To show me the next page of this story, And bring me to the line, Where I say I’m okay, And a new chapter, a better one, begins.

1:45am rolls around and our alarm begins to blare. Are we crazy? Who in their right mind gets up in the middle of the night to climb a mountain in the dark? Apparently, we do. We force down a snack while contemplating our decision and begin our uphill climb by 2:15am. We reach the top in two hours instead of the three we were told it would take. Good news is this makes us feel good about our physical ability. Bad news is we have more time to wait for the sun to rise while we shiver in the brisk mountain air. To kill time we take a couple of selfies in the dark using the light of a headlamp and have some ginger snaps. Where are we? We are sitting atop Sri Pada, also know as Adam's peak. This is Sri Lanka's fifth tallest mountain and the location of a sacred footprint. To the Buddhists it is believed to be the print of Buddha, Adam for Muslims/Christians, and Shiva for Hindus. We did not hike the 5000+ steps as part of a pilgrimage, as so many do, because we do not follow the path of any of these religions. However, there is something powerful about being atop this peak where multiple major religions converge. We came a week after pilgrimage season ended leaving behind boarded up establishments that had served tea for the weary climbers. This was very much intentional since we aimed to avoid the crowds that can be quite suffocating from what we hear, particularly on full moons and weekends. Sadly this also meant the temple at the top was closed and we did not get to view the sacred footprint ourselves. We did get a decent sunrise, spectacular views, a sense of accomplishment, and shaky legs for the walk down.
