Waldner-Found And Lost
Waldner is a Canadian singer-songwriter, who has recently relocated to London after fronting a number of bands and learning his trade in his native country.
Found And Lost is Waldner's first album since his relocation and his first bid to become a household name here in the UK with his blend of pop, folk, soul and feel good indie, mixing catchy melodies, clever instrumentation and soothing harmonies to create a tasteful mellow album that could find favour with classic gold listeners or lift operators the world over, but for anyone who craves something a little more challenging look away now.
I have to be brutally honest when I write a review and I'm sorry to say that I have something of a problem with the music of David Waldner, despite the nice arrangements and laidback melodies, this is all a bit nice, too mundane and twee for my liking, there's n0 drama, passion or true emotion to be found. There's nothing among these twelve tracks that could be described as edgy or essential, Waldner's vocals are a soft croon that neither lull or intoxicate, the music is often a little too retro and often whimsical, whilst the lyrics see's Waldner rhyme with all the skill of a sixth former, this is no poetic masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination.Â
There are a few nice moments the subtle acoustic guitar of Heaven Only Knows for instance or the use of strings and Doors like organ on In Stone but Waldner's limp lyrics and too nice croon soon spoil the mood. Elsewhere Waldner liberally sprinkles horns and horrible cliched pop hooks to everything he touches, making tracks such as the should be lush Wilderness into a nasty orchestral plastic soul number that leaves the listener a vile syrupy aftertaste that only a blast of hardcore punk or black metal can truly remove.
There's no denying that Waldner does possess the ability to arrange and produce an album but I'm not sure he has the passion or the soul to write one that will really shout out to the true music lovers out there.Â
