I'm glad you let yourself feel your feelings - I feel like we don't do that enough... Pushing our feelings down & bottling them up is a very bad habit - one we've been taught.... (I'm pretty sure it does quite a bit of damage to your mental health) Oh yes! Window replacements are quite expensive - the smaller ones are the MOST expensive. Didn't they give you a spare set (keys) when you got your car? I'm glad it all worked out for you - you handled it AMAZINGLY! ��

Yeah I have an ex who used to try to get me to not worry when stuff went wrong and although I think it was well meant, sometimes the best thing for me to do is actually just LET myself freak out for a minute, then I can pack it away and go ‘okay now we have to fix it’ but the freakout must occur or it’ll be an undercurrent that’s a lot more difficult to ignore. It’ll still be an undercurrent but if I’ve already sit with it a minute I can more easily push it down and walk on top of it.

As far as the windows goes- I know windows are difficult and expensive to replace, I just assumed that auto locksmiths are equally expensive, which is not the case. Much much cheaper to get an autolocksmith. I’m mostly talking about this for people who might not realize that- the only advantage the window thing would have is that I could have dealt with it, like, later. well, other than cleanup. 

It’s the dry season in OK one back window being out is deal-with-able for a few months while I put some money together, which was my rationale when considering it. 

(This was also when I was panicking, which is why it was the last option on the list after I quit freaking out. If A: we hadn’t been able to get my keys out or the door to open B: locksmith had not been available or had been more expensive than they apparently are C: my aunt had not been home to help- I didn’t check but she lives walking distance so that would have been my next move but I think she was doing 4th stuff with friends or maybe working the Uber thang- ‘smash a window with a brick’ was plan D. If that didn’t work for some reason, plan E was to walk to the restaurant/bar in walking distance and get drunk until someone rescued me or until I got thrown out, whichever came first.) 

The extra set of keys- I got a guy’s passion project. He drove this car for years and then when he was done he completely rebuilt the engine. He loves this car, he’s so happy when he sees me and I’m driving it, I love it and he genuinely wanted someone who would love this car to drive it, so we’re both happy with the situation. 

But it only came with one key and there’s no trunk key. (I can pop it and now that I’ve priced out auto locksmiths I know how to get a trunk key made.) 

I suspect that he lost his primary set and I’ve got the backup key.

And thanks! I don’t think I’d have handled it so well without the help of my incredibly sweet neighbor, but while I did panic I didn’t make decisions while being panicky, which was key I think.

The non-fancy-key-for-the-doors thing is true at least up to 2010-ish models. Just don’t use it to start the engine, because it’ll give you a couple false starts, then the computer will lock the engine down and you’ll have to tow the vehicle to a dealer and have them reset the computer and that CAN be expensive.

Yep, they are STRICTLY for unfucking the ‘I locked my keys in the car’ moment. which is, IMHO, worth the couple of bucks of mental security. 

my key is entirely chipless, because my car is old enough to buy vodka, and I honestly have nobody to blame but myself for my predicament yesterday. if I’d had a copy somewhere, even if my roommate had had it, i could have probably cadged a ride to and from work to grab the key and get into the car, but it was just one of those things. I hadn’t, I screwed up and made a mistake and it took me a while to fix it.

But that’s okay. 

Someone got their pizza, like, way late and were very understanding about it (in my experience, if you let folks know what’s going on and why their pizza is late, they are generally very cool about it). 

Me and my roommate had like a really frustrating hour, and my neighbor lost most of an hour of his life dealing with my silly car horseshit. 

That’s it. Which as far as ‘mistakes I have made’ goes, is pretty light in the consequences load. 

It’s one of those stories that as soon as it was fixed, immediately went from horror to humor.

Oooooh that's unfortunate, I'm sorry. On both fronts, dairy overdose and not being able to get relief. My mom did something with salt water and lemon juice that helped, but I don't know if it really helped or just dehydrated. If nothing else, water?????

I’m actually being pretty good about staying hydrated. I quit soda recently and now I mostly drink tea and water. Tea has a lot less caffeine so it’s been An Adjustment but I’m doing well on that front. I suspect the salt water and lemon thing helps rebalance your electrolytes, and gatorade can also do that. (I like to get the powdered gatorade and go light on the mix, though sometimes I get the cucumber lime gatorade just cause I love cucumber lime)

LOL RIGHT??? like, I loved writing an exasperated princess with frequent hangovers, and my favorite part of the story is the subtext is that like Hently has been patiently waiting for Morty to just, like, call him and be like ‘listen can we meet without the whole princess thing? For dinner? As a date?’

^agree. Very much agree. As much as I love King, his books just don't really do it for me. I still get confused how my dad's military friends (grown men who have seen the horrors of combat) can't get through 10 pages of a King book. And there I was at the age was 12 reading a *basic* story. Not to say they're not good, just not scary. But you little monster, love him. How you wrote this was very thrilling and the ending was a great surprise. Brilliant!

Partially I think it’s a generational thing. I’m an elder millennial, King is absolutely a Boomer. And I think where I differ on what I like versus what he clearly likes is that we find different things scary for different reasons. (As a side note, The Eye of the Dragon was actually really good, I believe he wrote it for his daughter Naomi who does not like scary stuff but does like Dragons and shit.) I have some friends who find his books super scary and stuff, but they’re alllll Gen X. 

I find him personally delightful, I follow him on fb and twitter because he mostly talks shit about 45, promotes books he likes, and posts pictures of Molly aka the Thing of Evil, his wonderful corgi. I genuinely love reading his introductions and anytime when he’s talking about writing. Even though I, to some extent disagree with a lot of his advice in On Writing, I also absolutely love to read it. 

I find him very personable and one of my secret (not anymore I guess) dreams is sending him a book I wrote and telling him how much he’s inspired me as a writer because, to be clear, he absolutely has.

There is a short story that came out... last year, I think? that your fans might willingly be diverted to. (It also involves something hidden, and friendship, and the like.) I can't think of the author now, but if you wanted something to maybe sate readers' appetites I could definitely find the info tomorrow and share. (If not, feel free to ignore me! I don’t think it’ll divert people because I suspect that most of the people who’ve made those comments don’t actually follow me, and anyway I wasn’t trying to divert people so much as... 

tumblr is kind of a ‘and then?’ culture. the stories are expected to grow over time. and many of them have room for it, but in my mind that one doesn’t, and I just didn’t want people to be waiting for bated breath for a continuation that will never come (from me, though there’s plenty of great writers on tumblr who may pick up that thread). 

it’s not a bad thing that we’re that way, and a lot of great stuff has come out of it, but it’s just not going to happen, for me, with that particular story and given what a huge draw that particular story has been for people to come to me, I didn’t want people to wait and hope for something that wasn’t going to happen. 

so I didn’t want people to set themselves up to be disappointed in me for something I didn’t offer, but the culture kind of does. it’s nobody’s fault it’s that way (or rather, it’s everybody’s, or both at the same time, somehow), but if I can see that coming then I can try to offset it and keep feelings from being ruffled. it’s a difficult world, anyway, if I can find a way to make it a touch easier, I will.

Technically yes but in reality Yama doesn’t land like a cat, she lands like a jello cube. If Nim ever fell off things she would land like a cat, but she never falls, so no cat-landings from her either. So in practice the only person, feline or other, landing like a cat in this household is me.
