Her mouth is filled with the taste of sour blood. Her blood. It no longer runs hot and metallic through her veins, not like it used to. That would require her to feel, to be alive, to be human, and she isn’t any longer. Instead, her blood is cold, viscous and as unpleasant as a lemon.

She is glad.

She stands in the ruins of a temple and finds her home here. Here she belongs, among the collapsed statues of her Goddess, the Great Athena, Deity of Wisdom and Justice and So Many Things. She is home amongst the ghosts of unfulfilled prayers and unpleasant truths. Her own truth is the most unpleasant of all.

She has discovered that not all dead die. Some are killed and walk the earth still.

Medusa is relieved under the pressure of her curse. She hopes that she will become like this temple--forgotten and broken, empty and silent, alone and abandoned. She prays to a goddess who can no longer hear her that she can find a shattered peace here, alone, without the touch of a hand or the pinch of another’s presence.

“My only company will be statues,” she swears to the heavens. She is unconscious of how the burning in her eyes has become more than just tears. She is unaware of the way her hair writhes. “I will never suffer the touch of another and no other will suffer the touch of me.”

She can still feel his blood on her hands. An unholy sacrifice in the den of her Goddess. She should be expelled. She should be punished. She should be killed.

MISS TWYLA WON MY ENTIRE HEART WITH THIS SCENE. SHE KNOWS HE TRIED HIS BEST AND HE DESERVES HELP.

yesss! on the next page she says something about courage and how hard it is to try for the first time and omggggg I love this lil grandma who is (as of my further reading) essentially now everyone’s grandma.

Oooooh that's unfortunate, I'm sorry. On both fronts, dairy overdose and not being able to get relief. My mom did something with salt water and lemon juice that helped, but I don't know if it really helped or just dehydrated. If nothing else, water?????

I’m actually being pretty good about staying hydrated. I quit soda recently and now I mostly drink tea and water. Tea has a lot less caffeine so it’s been An Adjustment but I’m doing well on that front. I suspect the salt water and lemon thing helps rebalance your electrolytes, and gatorade can also do that. (I like to get the powdered gatorade and go light on the mix, though sometimes I get the cucumber lime gatorade just cause I love cucumber lime)

Thank you for this! I loved everything from hungover princess to coconspiring knight to help her.

LOL RIGHT??? like, I loved writing an exasperated princess with frequent hangovers, and my favorite part of the story is the subtext is that like Hently has been patiently waiting for Morty to just, like, call him and be like ‘listen can we meet without the whole princess thing? For dinner? As a date?’

also my favorite comment on the monster under the fridge story, possibly of all time, was someone who just wrote “Nom!” but for the life of me I can’t find that comment now. whoever it was, I want you to know I fucking love you

She is :) I can only refomend Captain Marvel, and also Room. And she's also really amazing as a person.

Yeah I’m really interested in Captain Marvel. I think I’m going to skip Room, I heard good things but I read a plot summary and I think I would find it more upsetting than anything else. I’ve heard good things about the recent netflix one, Unicorn something? Unicorn Paint Store? (I just looked it up, it’s Unicorn Store lol)

^agree. Very much agree. As much as I love King, his books just don't really do it for me. I still get confused how my dad's military friends (grown men who have seen the horrors of combat) can't get through 10 pages of a King book. And there I was at the age was 12 reading a *basic* story. Not to say they're not good, just not scary. But you little monster, love him. How you wrote this was very thrilling and the ending was a great surprise. Brilliant!

Partially I think it’s a generational thing. I’m an elder millennial, King is absolutely a Boomer. And I think where I differ on what I like versus what he clearly likes is that we find different things scary for different reasons. (As a side note, The Eye of the Dragon was actually really good, I believe he wrote it for his daughter Naomi who does not like scary stuff but does like Dragons and shit.) I have some friends who find his books super scary and stuff, but they’re alllll Gen X. 

I find him personally delightful, I follow him on fb and twitter because he mostly talks shit about 45, promotes books he likes, and posts pictures of Molly aka the Thing of Evil, his wonderful corgi. I genuinely love reading his introductions and anytime when he’s talking about writing. Even though I, to some extent disagree with a lot of his advice in On Writing, I also absolutely love to read it. 

I find him very personable and one of my secret (not anymore I guess) dreams is sending him a book I wrote and telling him how much he’s inspired me as a writer because, to be clear, he absolutely has.
