Today was the first in our series of Sunday morning bird walks. We meet at 7:00 and stroll around the property. Today we saw/heard 31 species. Although we did see and hear a Black-Throated Green Warbler; this picture was taken a few days ago by Mark Paul in another part of Vermont. The Kinglets are on the move, and have been seen numerous times this weekend in Huntington, VT. Golden-crowned Kinglets (pictured here) are year round residents in Vermont, and nests in spruce-fir or other conifer dominated forests. The Ruby- throated Hummingbirds are moving south. In preparation for migration these little birds can almost double their weight from their summer weight of about 3.5 grams. Although small, these birds are known for flying across the Gulf of Mexico (a 500 mile non-stop trip). Due to the mysterious bird illness impacting birds in the midwest and the eastern part of the country we removed our bird feeders a few weeks ago. Before taking them down, we spent time looking closely at the birds to ensure that we were not seeing any birds showing signs of the mysterious illness. We have netting on all the windows to prevent bird collisions. The last few years the Great created Flycatchers have helped themselves to pieces of the netting for their nests. Great Crested Flycatchers sometimes use shed snake skins in their nests. Common Mergansers are moving north. Although some are seen throughout the winter, in general, they are one of the first species of waterfowl returning to, or migrating through, Vermont. Some birds stay and breed here, while many others continue their migration north. This species breeds through the northern boreal and mixed forests across the northern United States and Canada.
