On June 16th, 1987 the first-ever caller dialed into SDF-1, an anime-fandom-oriented bulletin board system running on an Apple IIe down in Texas. In 1991 the system was transformed into a public access Unix system, running Interactive System V on an i386 PC.

Today – thirty years later – SDF is still still providing free Unix shell accounts and email, as well as Web site hosting, VOIP services, cloud storage, federated social media (Mastodon and GNU social), streaming radio, and a gaggle of other features and services, not the least of which being ...Gopher site hosting!

I signed-up in 2013 to play with Gopher. The system was so fun and useful that I upgraded my paid membership tier a couple of times and I’m still on there. My personal website is hosted there. SDF has had tens of thousands of account registrations over the decades and, while most users come and go, there are always a few dozen active users posting messages on BBOARD, chatting in COM, or quietly coding, learning, experimenting, and creating with the systems and resources available. It’s a great little community to be part of.

So, here’s my little contribution for SDF’s 30th. We’re gonna stick this on some merch and have it available in the fundraiser store. Stickers are on the way; other stuff later maybe. I’ll keep you posted.
