I finally realized why Reverie was familiar, aside from the POI-Westworld-Dollhouse familiarity. It also reminds me of Chris Carterās Harsh Realm. In Harsh RealmĀ the military designed a virtual reality game/environment to test out simulated scenarios with soldiers, for one reason or another the soldiers are stuck in the VR game.Ā
They recruit Thomas Hobbes before he retires from the military to retrieve the soldiers, except he also gets stuck in the game, where the world turned into a post-apocalyptic nightmare world.Ā
It was a really interesting premise that was cut too soon and canceled.Ā
So far Reverieās still playing it case of the week, but eventually Iām hoping it scales up to something ambitious because I know Sarah Shahi can play that.Ā
Also, one of the best things about Reverie is its diverse cast unfortunately, the writing still has a lot of kinks. I just finished watching episode 2 and 3, and while I think the Reverie of the Week are a bit more interesting, Iām just not invested in the people in the Reverie. The writers keeps trying to pull on the heart strings way too much, and they seem to think the audience cares about what happens to the clients after Mara saves them.Ā
Personally, Iām miffed when the scene goes on without Mara and the rest of the team.Ā
The cliffhanger ending in episode 3 was surprising and Iām wondering if what Iām thinking will happen is going to happen.Ā Ā
I have a few other things:
- Why isnāt there a special tech room where Mara can enter the Reverie so Paul and the Reverie techs can monitor Mara?Ā
- I thought Mara has a few more advantages in game than other clients?
- I am frankly surprised it took three episodes before someone threatened to sue them. How does the logistics of the Reverie program even work? Just looking at how tech is adopted in real life, this would cause a lot of noise. Except, nope, none.
- There are some think pieces about apps and how theyāve retrained human behavior and how some/a lot of people get addicted to apps. And yet the Reverie team are always surprised when a client doesnāt want to leave a perfect fantasy world.
- Writers please stop writing clunky dialogue and cribbing from Star Wars and Pitch Perfect. I knew the moment they called one characterĀ āVaterā we were dealing with a missing dad issue.
- TBH Westworld did better with narratives/human fantasy and cost.Ā
- I honestly thought the show was based on the East Coast! Did we always know it was set in LA???
