Remarks: Dull day, difficult conditions.  During the late afternoon we began work in a new box which we have designated Search Area 3.  We will focus the remaining days of the campaign in this area.  It is situated immediately eastward of Area 1, and a little to the south.  We will give the corner coordinates and a graphic in tomorrow’s log.

At 10 this morning there was a largish, all-white bird flapping about wildly above the bridge.  After five or six attempts it finally succeeded in landing on the only available space on the ship, the deck immediately forward of the bridge.  As so often with such visitors, for a while it just flopped down on its belly, exhausted.  It later began licking the rainwater from cavities in the deck.  It was a snowy sheathbill, the first we have seen.  It is a common scavenger around the rookeries of the Falklands, but it breeds only in the Antarctic.  It will be noticed in the attachment that its toes are stocky and well defined; sheathbills are the only unwebbed Antarctic-breeders.  It has now been with us for eight hours and shows no signs of leaving.  Our impression is that it might be sea sick.

Remarks: There has been much discussion on the matter of when we should cease operations in Area Gambler.  It has been decided that, until there has been an opportunity to meet with Captain Chema of Gambler, we will cease work in the current box and resume the search in Area 2 where we left off on 16 February.  The Attachment shows the lines that have been completed in Area Gambler.

We are at present (2200 hrs) recovering the fish while heading, in moderate conditions, for Search Area 2

Weather forecasts indicate that we will have to return to port sometime on Thursday.
