I can't tell you how delighted I was to see this response! That was my exact inspiration for this drawing! It had been many years since I saw the description, and the book it was in was lost during a move.
I loved John and the Silver Stringed Guitar stories back when they were being published in Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine and collected Manly Wade Welman's books. He was an actual professor studying Appalachian folklore and music. All of his stories were based in genuine folklore.
