Void Of Vision - What I’ll Leave Behind
One of my favorite things is seeing a band I already really enjoy progressing into something better, especially when they chance their sound. A lot of bands get worse when they change their sound, but some get a lot better, whether they find a sweet spot in doing something new and keeping what works, or discovering something that works insanely well, and keeping that. Aussie metalcore band Void Of Vision is one of those bands that seems to have only gotten better with time, because their new album is their best yet, especially when it’s got both a heavier and more accessible sound at the same time. I already really enjoyed this band, specifically with 2019’s Hyperdaze, but this album is even better.
At only a half hour, this record weaves through metalcore, alt-metal, industrial, and some synth-pop. That last one is so strange to say, but there are some moments here where this record almost dives into synth-pop territory in the vein of a band like Depeche Mode. This record is unique, interesting, and a blast to listen to. It doesn’t have a whole lot going for it, at least minus a couple of key sounds, but it’s still quite fun, and it’s still interesting. The sound of nu-metalcore is really played out by this point, but this record keeps it oddly fresh. If you enjoy nu-metalcore, or you just want something with some catchiness and accessibility to it, I’d gleefully recommend this record.
With all that said, however, I do have some slight qualms with it that don’t prevent me from loving this album, per se, but they prevent me from making this an album I’ll highlight at the end of the year. I can see this being an honorable mention, but not quite on the list proper. The album doesn’t have too many discernible hooks, so despite the songs having a synth-pop sound in spots, they aren’t that memorable, but I still have a blast listening to this. The breakdowns still hit hard, and the hooks are fine, but they don’t amount to anything substantial. Everything is done well, and for fans of nu-metal and nu-metalcore, I’d easily recommend this.
