this might go over your head if you don’t know what a derivative is. but the integral is the inverse of the derivative.
a simpler way to explain: draw a graph, keeping everything above the x-axis. lets start with a horizontal line at y=1. now, the integral is simply the area under the curve! suppose you want to find the integral of y=1 from x=2 to x=5. we take the difference between our x-values (3) and multiply by 1 (since the area here is simply a rectangle) and we get 3.
things get a bit more complicated…consider y=x. the integral of y=x from x=0 to x=2? 1/2(2)(2) = 2. this is because now that the line is slanted, the area underneath will be a triangle.
now once you get into non-linear curves, we use a formula taking anti-derivatives of the function of both endpoints and subtracting them. for polynomials it’s actually quite simple! (such as x^2, x^3-1, etc)…. but ofc not everything is a polynomial. which is where we get into u-sub, trig sub, integration by parts, all that jazz.
here’s the format for an integral, with just y=1:
the a and b tell you which x-values you start and end at. for our example, we would put 2 in for a and 5 in for b. and the dx is a notation that comes in handy when dealing with differential equations. (i’m trying to not make this post super long so i don’t bore people to death…so i’m not explaining what dx is LMAO)
