There’s a rawness crystallized in her eyes, wound in the shape of her lips and taught around bones that felt lethargic. Her eyes had been glued to the familiar numbers across the door for longer than she cared to acknowledge, the bronze chipping off more than she remembered. She was starting to match up details and memories with the door. This feeling, this foreign reverence in her gut, fogging her mind and yet sharpening the things she wanted to say to the woman behind this door; otherworldly. The anxiousness was something she knew how to disarm, even control, but this? Not an inch of her was equipped to handle the sensation tunneling through places that she hardly gave a thought about.
But then, she supposed a near death experience and a jog of the memory will do that to you. Bring more to light, in a manner that someone wouldn’t think possible. Or maybe, it was just denial all those long years. A good deal of them spent being selfish, even if the self-care was needed. Yet in all those instances of isolation, of being splintered from her own identity--
Jessica Drew had always been there. Forevermore.
❝...Okay. Time to take the plunge.❞ It was breathed outward, under a whisper that carried the remainder of paralyzing nerves as she finally raised her right arm, the leather of her jacket scrunching quietly as she gave a light rapping against the door. There was a quick pursing of her lips as the woman waited, scratching at a random itch along her neck as she waited more--more--the door opened too fast for her, nerves blocking her keen listening to Jessica’s footsteps. Carol started, mouth opened, eyes open and bright as they landed on the familiar face of her partner in crime. And then to her long black hair, to her startling green eyes that were locked with Carol’s crystal blue ones. The blonde’s mouth hung open awkwardly, mind reeling to spit out something, but what was the right thing?
‘The truth? Now? ...No. Not yet. Just wait.’
❝I... hi. Hey. Uh... Sorry, I didn’t call--I thought it’d be fine. ...It’s been a year, I know. If you’re mad, you’re mad. But I just...❞ The troubles of space, the atrocity of losing time, the horror of not being able to see each other--this was something they were supposed to be used to. But here in the now, for Carol, it felt crushing. Like gravity was plummeting on her ribcage. She gave a swift lick of her upper lip, eyes still glued to her friend’s face and trying to muster something feasible. ❝...I’m here. And I needed to see you. Because there’s something... something I need to go over with you. Things. Stuff. ...Also I missed you.❞ A sheepish downturned smile sprung along her lips, tousling the back of her golden mane as she gave a chuckle. ❝But I think that’s obvious. Or I hope it is.❞
