In his third year he was influenced by his concern on deforestation 

Focused on Bateria 

First time he stepped away from camera 

The circles are meant to represent landscapes 

He allowed the petri dish and seeds to self sustain themselves then pulled them out like us destroying the forests

After third year he took a break from images and went to a rainforest as a personal, emotional experience 

He then worked around doing retail jobs and freelance until he started a internship Karst doing a curator role - got into Karst through a callout, was a simple CV application, put his ‘stake in the ground’

Karst does technical and admin internships 

Working at Karst helped him ground himself - as an intern his was at Karst for six months

Exeter Phoenix got in contact with him about presenting in the cafe - wall space was too big for what he had so he had to revisit his project even though he thought it had finished 

Artifacts became rectangular to represent the landscape more - due to the material being bigger it allowed the artifact to be disfigured which caused some parts to be in focus and others not - alongside this he grew a physical landscape 

He's old circular artifacts from petri dishes were presented to see if people would take care of them the same way we should take care of the rainforest - incorporated line graph design of deforestation into presentation 

After this switched over to freelance and working over creating

Industry:

The power of social media - he was contacted by a banking company to come on a shoot with a speed skating team 

He also did contemporary dance photography - collaborated with dancers and university students - moved into music videos 

Freelance work - worked on a film by le moon productions based in Exeter 

Personal project that he started at the end of last year - started off organically, he has a huge interest in games, watched a lot of people playing games as he didn’t have a lot of time to play them himself, was interested in strong story and cinematic games, post apocalyptic settings - Brett was drawn to the landscapes of the games, their cinematic value 

Brett went out and emulated the games aesthetics - was just interested in so just went for it 

Landscape photography - old army training grounds, continued with the emulation of the lush greenery of a game, had a blair witch project feel - in this shot he had thoughts around deforestation 

Began to look at the untouched landscape - how would nature react to the sudden departure of human beings 

Actively took images of landscapes that looked like they hadn't been touched - a beautiful landscape but depressing to look at , a sublime landscape and turning it ugly, a depiction of death juxtaposed with a beautiful landscape 

Considers shooting as primary research 

He edited the images by bringing out all of the colours to make it ‘beautiful’ then brought the saturation right down to represent his narrative 

Texture drives the way he takes images - is minimalistic and symbolic 

Vast landscapes so people aren’t visible - how small we are

Started putting landscapes on phone app to put a white border around it 

Then took white paper and mud to create a muddy background to go behind the images which was then scanned in - to represent the image belongs to the landscape

‘Ripped apart landscape’ - wasn’t done with scissors 

Using app ‘ Inframe’ to fit them in instagram

Lockdown project - using mirrors in garden to make it appear bigger

Things has changed about curation:

Museums no longer tell you the value of the work - imagining the world in a ways that's much more plural - tate modern question art around and insert parallel narratives

Technicians and conservators assist each other is putting up work for an exhibition - cleaners, marketer, finance as well - an environment that needs a lot of different skills

Envisionaries #1, 2013 --- My mouth during speech pinned over the eyes of my ancestors 45 x 69cm Photomontage; C-type lambda prints, box framed in black

   Each idea sparked several new ones

·   Interest in photography came from dislike of it

·   Gives a voice to things that were once silent

·   Dad suffered with metal health – didn’t know what to do – was able to interact with dad

·   Images of him and his dad

·   Created an upscaled mask of fathers head – opposite of 3d printing – exact proportions with his head  size imprinted instead forcing him into a smile – mask acts as gagging device, silence and can’t see – father double, a struggle or embrace – maternal body language

·   Presents mask sliced all the way through on a spilt plinth that’s not straight – not completely aligned

·   We always assumed that something is digitally manipulated – what’s real and what's not

·   He likes to play into this idea of disbelief – although photos can be photoshopped- images more truth that they seemed.

Sugar Paper Theories 2014-2016

 ·   Set in Iceland

·   Double murder in Iceland that took place in the 70’s

·   News paper clippings – summarise case through the eyes of the media

·   Gained access to case files – courts narrative – revisit areas within files – photograph them in present say

·   Title came from photograph – conspiracy theorists timeline of events – wrote on sugar paper – his ‘sugar paper theory’

·   Exploit witnesses who were defend the people

·   False narrative of what happened

·   Police archive

·   Case files littered with photographs – narrative pulled out of thin air –‘German super cop’ – found six innocent people and was convinced that they did it – bend evidence to fir narrative- people believed they did it  due to being in solitary confinement so desperate to leave 

·   Responding to conspiracies – man in military base who killed men

·   Visited areas where police said where the men were killed

·   Geographically factual but not true – fact and truth – reflective of the person telling it

·   Out of thin air – next door neighbour

Gina Pane & Mason ( Commercial Photographer )

Performance artist - directed/pointed at 60’s political and social context

Pane destroyed her body in a physical way

Used Mason which is odd as normally for her type of work a documentary photographer would be used. Using a commercial photographer makes her work seem more desirable and heightens her performance due to the lights and style.

Dinu Le

Has a political undercurrent in his work

Doesn’t look at the document at face value

His background - influenced by the Chinese opera (expressive)

Interested in how performers use their whole body to perform a message yet never use their voice.

Le access’ a lot of work from archives to use in his own work.

Images from China in 60’s-70’s show the ‘protagonist’ never looking at the camera and always performing a gesture in propaganda images

Emerged into real life in the 70’s - subjects never looking at camera but instead looking at the ‘rising sun’ - linked to the leader of China at the time

Le showed a found photograph with a lawyer ( defending victims of corruption) stood outside of court with his body being physically violated but it is still hinted that he is looking at the rising sun. He is ironically surrounded by barriers and a manmade carving of the mountains.

The ‘rising sun’ phase reflects a dark time
